Dear Abby I wish three was some way to make families understand that because someone has been widowed, we don't stop caring about them. so why do they stop inviting us to family functions? Is it because they didn't care for us in the first place? Left out in Iowa
Reply: There isn't one-size fits all answer to your question. However, I suspect that in many cases it's because the wiodw's presence is a painful reminder of the family member that is missing.
SO DUH LEAVE HER/HIM OUT THAT WILL CERTAINLY HELP HER/HIM
I think I will write Dear Abby after work tonight....

Sent my reply in to her using the link. Let's see if she won't publish something different after hearing from those of us know what it's like to be the one that has something you might "catch."

Holy crap! I could have written that a couple of months ago, but I didn't; and now I have moved from Iowa to Oregon. I also wondered if they had never cared for me; and with one daughter-in-law, I think that was the case. Not the other one, or either of his "boys." However, his sons and their wives acted like I no longer existed after he passed. I was included in the first Christmas, but that was it. I recently heard that when my sister-in-law ran into one of my step-sons, when he heard I had moved he teared up. Yeah, right. He knew that I was moving, and when. I can only hope to keep contact with the grandkids and maybe they will come to visit and know me here someday. If not, oh well. Sure, it might be painful to see your father's wife after he passed, but I was with him almost 20 years and they needed to step up to the plate. After all, they are adults. I had a relationship with the grandkids too, just as their dad did. I held them when they were tiny babies in the hospital, I loved them too. I would have come to some of their games if I had been told when they were (when I asked,) but the stepsons/wives didn't answer me, and I didn't push. Well, it is what it is; hope that Iowa woman finds some closure better than I did. I will always love his sons just as I loved him, and their wives as well, and they are welcome to come and visit me anytime; I would love it! However, I am not holding my breath. Sometimes you have to just move on.

Well, she obviously doesn't have half the insights her Momma did! Good grief! :(

I wrote her as well! Agree, she is a bit clueless.

I think that the "Dear Abby" now, is the daughter of the original "Dear Abby". The earlier Dear Abby, Pauline Phillips, passed away. But, the newest "Dear Abby" should know better. Judith
