A Rain Experience

Today a storm started brewing, not a big one, but one with lots of wind, trees bending and jerking around. Joe and I used to love to experience a storm together. He had 2/3 of our deck made into a screen room where we could sit and drink our coffee and feel the wind blowing on us, hear the rain hitting the roof over us, and we felt snug and dry as we watched and felt the weather and talked.

Today as the wind picked up and the sky started turning darker, I said, "Honey, a storm's coming. Wanna sit outside on the deck?" No answer. I said, "Wow, those trees are really bending low and lots of leaves are floating down. See that?" No answer. I thought how happy Joe would be at this very moment if he were here. I thought maybe I should go out and sit by myself, but it is a little scary alone during a storm. I looked out the sliding glass doors at our adirondack chairs that we used to sit in. They were empty. We had such happiness there, so much closeness, so much laughter, so many plans for our future.

I stayed inside in my recliner as I watched the storm alone and felt such sadness. Such little things.....they would mean nothing to anyone else, but they meant everything to us. I was so sad today.

What stories do all of you have to tell of your "doing nothing together"? Would love to hear them.

We went to the public library together. He would insist on carrying my books and we had a special corner that was "ours." We used to tease about who had more fines. Silly, but very sweet and oh, how I miss it.

My husband Don and I liked to go shopping. Nothing inpaticular, just being together. We would wait for a day that we had off together and we would go. Seemed like that was the day that it would rain. We would laugh at how silly we were. He would hold his coat over me to keep us "dry"! Running to the car. I miss his laughter the most. His whole face would light up and he would make me laugh, just watching him. We would buy things that we didn't really need, then Don would say we were dangerous together, neither of us could tell the other "NO"! Happy Memories!

Totally understand..........we would sit on a swing on the deck together for hours.................talking, and looking out into the yard..............laughing..............reading..............sitting out in the rain sometimes.........................I get it now..............remember folks reminising..........still hurts o go there muh of the time.................thanks for sharing

I actually had a very similar story. Two nights ago we had severe thunder storms here. My husband would have been on the front porch smoking and being one with God. He actually sat on the front porch while a tornado hit a mile away. He just loved stormy weather. He said he could feel the power of God in them. I sat on the front porch, scared and could see him there watching too. I was not totally alone, my brother was with me, so that helped. We lit a candle for my hubby and both thought of him. I totally understand your story. THank you for sharing.

Your post hit home this morning. Last year Mike and I went fishing on a local lake we'd never been to because he'd heard it was a good muskie lake. We were the only ones on the lake that day, we didn't see a muskie but had a really fun time (we brought the dogs along too). Today's paper - front page of one of the sections - a story about this lake....I wanted to call out to Mike "you have to read this!". I really, really miss not having him here to share all the little things....

We would drive to the bay and watch the people fishing from the pier, or just enjoy watching the mullet jumping and he would sit in the car while I walked the dog, I surely miss that...maybe I will go out tomorrow and do that for his Father's Day. thanks for the memory

I felt like you last night. We loved to watch storms together too. We would always sit out on the porch and watch a storm come up. A storm was coming last night and I went out on the porch and watched the trees bend and the wind blow. I so wished Brian was here with me. I don't know if I'll ever enjoy a storm again.

We would also sit on our back covered patio and watch the rain. It doesn't storm that often in Socal so it was a treat to us if we got to share thunder and lightening. We also would walk the pier and watch the waves, something about the ocean that we both connected with. It is just those little shared moments that run through our bodies reminding us of our connection....missing our connection

Mike and I would go to swap meets, flea markets, farmer's markets with the kids in tow on Saturday mornings before we went into work at 12. There was not much chance of us doing things without bringing the kids along.

We also liked watching storms, and sitting on the back covered deck just listening to the waterfall or watching the rain hit the solar lights and look like little crystals falling down around them. I think it's those special things that mean the most, those are the best memories. I hope you are able to get back to sitting out there and enjoying thos storms, knowing he is there by your side spiritually if not physically. Hugs.

We loved storms too - seems a popular thing !
Our special 'doing nothing together' thing was when Rod was first diagnosed ill but still sort of ok and I was still working; Friday evenings we would go buy fish n chips and take them in the car to a place called Daddyhole Plain to eat. We would sit in the car on the cliff top overlooking the bay and it was so quiet and peaceful. I miss those evenings so much..........

Sunday afternoons were spent with Frank watching football games or NASCAR - or flipping from one to the other. After lunch I'd get on the sofa with the Sunday paper and read & nap. We might not say much, but we were together and we spent many years doing this. He passed away 3 mo. before our 51st anniversary. The first 18 mo., Sundays were torture for me -- but now they are better. We also shopped together for groceries or plants in Spring. He hated the mall & didn't go there often. I notice older couples in stores and envy them!

A couple of quotes from an article on Widowhood: "You don't 'Get Over' the man, though after a yr. or 2 you do get over the death; but you have to learn to live in another country, in which you're an unwilling refugee."

"One person said: 'I have plenty of people to do things with; I just have no one to do nothing with.' Exactly!!

Those little things that we shared is why we miss them so much....I am sorry for your sadness. Larry and I love to sit and watch the rain as well. He was never very handy building things and he put a roof over our patio so we could sit in the rain....it leaked but we used to sit there side by side during a storm anyway. Hugs Lu Ann

Sunday afternoons, was our time, and we would just laze on the couch, and watch an old movie. Just "be". while we were watching, he would play with his phone. LOVED the techie stuff, and would play on it, and watch at the same time.

Man, I MISS him playing on that phone, and sitting in his chair!

I can still hear my Mike's voice say - What do you think of the yard- after he mowed it. I usually said no, and he would say, come out and take a look. Then we'd go outside and walk the perimeter of our property and comment on the pear trees, tiger lily's, and whatever else was growing in the yard. The trees he planted for me are growing tall and strong and represent him well. Now, I'm doing the same thing with my grandson- we walk the perimeter together and talk, talk, talk. Life is precious, especially when it's free. Oh, I do miss my landscaper!
