I thought I'd join and share my experience with Tinnitus with other people who may not be coping.
I have had Tinnitus since I was in my early teens and I have never seemed to be bothered by it.
My Mother and Father also has Tinnitus.
My Mother's Tinnitus was unexpected and made her very upset, but she has overcome the issue.
My Father's Tinnitus came from being in the war, so loud noises were the factor in this case.
The sounds I hear all come from my right ear.
They range from hissing to faint high pitched ringing.
But since I have had this issue for as long as I can remember it does not bother me and doesn't interfere with daily life.
MY THEORY:-
I believe a constant high pitched frequency can cause Tinnitus to flare up and make it louder because listening to this frequency makes your ear zone in on the whatever pitch your brain is ringing at.
So of course your brain already has that ringing so when the high frequency from whatever is making it has stopped, the sound carries on making an unwary potential Tinnitus sufferer quite alarmed.
WHAT WAS MY CULPRIT?:-
In my case the source was from a PC I had built.
There was an issue with the hardware causing the faint high pitch sound.
So in short constant electrical noise.
So once I had remove that piece of hardware, the Tinnitus reduced to the typical very faint white noise like hissing I hear.
Hope this gives some insight to people out there who may find thier Tinnitus has flared up unexpectedly.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
Did not make this high pitched sound until i installed a new High-end GPU which is giving off the high pitched frequency.
Either a dodgy capacitor or Ferrite chokes which regulate the voltage are giving off this sound.
The previous card which was identical did not do this but it overheated.
I used overheating card for quite a while but it did not make this high pitch sound.
I've been racking my brain trying to think what caused this. I don't entirely believe the hearing loss theory Im more inclined to believe that its some kind of brain malfunction. I was very interested to read that you believe that its cumulative, did you read that somewhere or is it a theory of yours? I cant think of any one thing that triggered this, but since Ive had it I can think of lots of things over the years that could have contributed to it.
Again, your a wise one to not fully subscribe to the hearing loss bit.
I've been tested to have perfect hearing in both ears by my ent and my audiologist last January, and I've had tinnitus for 5 years. I have perfect hearing yet I have bilateral tinnitus. Just as countless other T patients in their 20s, 30s and 40s with perfect hearing. My audiologist has had T since she was 11 (why she got into the field) and still has perfect hearing well into her 40s.
Hearing loss and tinnitus are not inextricably or inherently linked. They never have been. ENTs erroneously explain they are exclusive as part of routine rhetoric they provide all new tinnitus patients. I don't blame them completely, tinnitus is complex and they have noses and throats that can actually be helped to concern for. Tinnitus is way down on their list of interests. This is why audiologists are a much better bet for us.
Our hearing system is like any other part of our body. Like hips, backs and knee joints, the cartilage that facilitates these joints can break down over time through process of aging, or, they can be damaged in one unfortunate blow (an injury or car accident).
Our hearing system is the same; there is no definitve rule per say. The onset of life long tinnitus can occur in one second as a 19 year old soldier is caught by surprise in an explosion.
Or, tinnitus can result from an accumulation of decades of wear and tear: infections, ototoxic meds, loud work environment, electric guitars, military service, car stereos, certain antidepresents, emotional strain, OCD, bad marriages, pneumonia, that firecracker your cousin threw at you in 1966.. all of it is accounted for by our hearing system and can work toward the onset of tinnitus.
Going on 5+ months now. Every day is a stressful day, and that's not just because of the T.
But, I can't seem to get myself going on all the things that you folks have tried. In my mind, I keep waiting for that magic pill that we will take three times a day and be T-free.
I was all gung-ho on the N treatment, but that surge seems to have died except for the Times article.
The mornings and right after dinner seem to be the worst parts of the day. Laying in bed, waiting for the sun to come up, thinking about how good things used to be back in September 07, well, it's enough to drive me crazy.
And then I get up, and a whole new day of nothing starts again.

Air pressure, checked my neck and high pitches.
My ears can hear absoloutley perfectly.
By this time the ringing has subsided even less.
He asks me about my current drinking habits and well I can say they heave escalated.
Alcohol, coffee and smoking are a bit out of control at the moment since my new occupation lets me which contributed to Tinnitus.
Then he also states there has been a virus going around which can affect the ears, neck, nose and bouts of dizziness.
Will be checking up with the GP in two weeks.
Will post my result then.
Take care to all of the people suffering with this issue and I hope there will be an end all cure.

My hearing is fine, thank you for your concern. As you mention it, you might come up for skiing sometime. There is a seniors discount on lift tickets through April 30th. Enjoy your weekend.
If the sound from your computer is a bad mobo capacitor you may be able to pin point it by removing your PCI cards and listening closely to the motherboard without distraction of other components whiring about. I use iMacs at work and a small 'silent' PC at home. Are you going to keep your custom rig or get another machine all together?
