Downton Abbey - Season Four

TheWhip
Is set to premier on 5 January 2013. While I am super excited for a new season, I know the season premier is going to be so sad and depressing. i do not look forward to the family's reaction to Matthew's death. I kind of hope they will do it were some months have elapsed.

I recently heard a great 2007 song the other day, "Falling Slowly" because it popped up in my newsfeed, accompanied by the sad news that the male singer, Glen Hansard, just died in a motorcycle accident. I learned that the song won an award and was featured in an indie movie called Once. I just watched it, and it's really good. They made it in 3 weeks on a $100,000 budget. It's streaming on...

At least Mrs. Hughes managed to get Mr. Carson to bend in hiring Mr. Mosley. Sure Mosley did himself no favors by trying to look like he valued his abilities so highly that being a footman was beneath him, but Carson was just basically holding a grudge after that.
Now that Green's back, it appears rather obvious that more than one person at that table in the servants' hall have figured out Anna has an issue with him - pretty sure her reaction to him confirmed Bates' belief that Green is the one responsible for raping her and both James and Baxter clearly noticed something was going on as well and seemed to put some things together when Green told that story about the last time he was there. Even Hughes reaction was quite telling though I don't think as many people seemed to catch her reaction to him - I'm curious whether anyone overheard her confronting him about what he did to Anna and I'm surprised she didn't say to him that if he ever even so much as looks at Anna the wrong way ever again that there are multiple people in that house who would gladly physically harm him so he shouldn't dare do anything to her again and he should be grateful certain people do not know what he did do or else he'd be dead. Now that Mary's aware of some of the circumstances of what happened to Anna, how long before she comes to realize that it wasn't some intruder - I mean, they left a door unlocked for Mary and Blake to get in after they'd all gone to bed without any concern for an intruder so why would Mary willingly accept such a notion that some random stranger walked all the way up to the house and broke in to the servants' entrance and happened to come across Anna and decided to rape her?
Speaking of Mary, are we back to her having multiple suitors and "oh just how will she choose"? Clearly, Charles Blake's got that opposites attract vibe going for him while both Tony Gillingham and Evelyn Napier are "old friends" and she surely seems to be into Gillingham now that he's tied to someone else much like how she came to fall for Matthew. Who has the edge though? Do any of them? And how much of the pig incident was Mary genuinely wanting to help save those pigs vs. wanting to show Blake she's not some stuffy aristocrat unwilling to change with the times?
Surely the girl Tom met at that political meeting will wind up being a new love interest...
Why do you suppose Isobel was so adamant about nursing Violet back to health herself?
What's the purpose of Robert going to America to help Cora's brother exactly? Did anyone catch that bit? And did anyone else think it was odd how freely Mary and Robert were speaking of Thomas' sexuality when she suggested Robert take Thomas instead of Bates so Bates would not have to leave Anna while she's still dealing with the rape aftermath?
Lastly, how long will Rose and Jack Ross' hidden romance last? Or should I say, how long before Mary tells someone else what she saw happening in the servants' hall?
Rose's situation will have all Hell break lose when and if it is found out by Robert in particular.
Tom and the political girl will certainly get together. She seemed like a nice women.
Edith and her Aunt will surely " travel " perhaps to America for which I thought would be the storyline. It makes more sense in a way.
Isobel needed something in her life since she lost her son and this was her way of feeling needed.
Mr. Bates will find out what happened and then beat the crap out of the dude. Not sure about the rest of the storyline.
Mary will have suitors and hopefully not someone dull for her choice
Robert's duty was to help his brother in law as far as I can tell. .
Surely Rose and Jack will be found out. Mary already knows... it can't be long before someone else is clued in too.
The "political girl" as you called her is a definite step up from scheming Edna, probably ten steps up. A much better fit for Tom and someone who I would assume the family will approve of for him (because you know they will weigh in on that - but I do wonder, if Tom were to remarry, would he then move out of the house with Sybbie or would they insist he and his new bride live there still so they can keep Sybbie close?)
I did read next week's episode summary said something about Edith travelling so it looks like you're right on that one - it didn't say where she'd be going or if she would travel with anyone, but I sort of wonder if she might be heading to Germany to look for Gregson herself. It's too soon for her to go away to have the baby and they wouldn't write her to depart and just not be heard from for the rest of the season till she has the baby without anyone else knowing, right?!
The preview for next week said something about Bates going missing so perhaps he does beat up Green... I sort of hope not though, not because I don't want Green to get his comeuppance because he so deserves that, but I don't want Bates to get prosecuted for beating the guy up.
Do you consider Charles Blake dull? I get the impression he is the suitor "in the lead" now for Mary, since both showed different sides of themselves in that pig watering fiasco. And who knew Mary could make scrambled eggs? I think this week was the most we've ever seen Mary do in terms of physical work!
Mary vs. Pigs! LOLOL! Made me cringe and want to bathe just watching it!!
IMO, Gillingham is the best choice.
I'm still on the fence with regard to Mary's suitors. I would've said Gillingham up till this past episode, now I'm leaning Blake. Mary likes someone who challenges her and also tends to want someone who walks away rather than bother to chase her, so either way she's good when it comes to these two. I'm thinking right now Evelyn Napier is on the outside looking in when it comes to Mary because the other two trump him in terms of their connecting with her. At this point though I'm not finding myself rooting for one over the other since none of them have the same rootability that Matthew had with regard to Mary.
Mary and her many suitors... it seems she's got more men chasing after her now as a widow with a child than she did before realizing her true feelings for Matthew and marrying him. I'm still slightly favoring Blake over Gillingham for her affections, but I will be just fine with Mary remaining single for a while longer too. On a side note, it was nice to see Mary spend a little time with George today - for a while I was thinking she was willing to spend more time with the pigs than with her son!
I'm glad Anna told Mary the truth about Green and that Mary spoke with Gillingham about him without giving the whole truth away. It's not the least bit surprising that Green wound up dead nor was it a shock that Bates would've conveniently taken that same day off for no apparent reason to set up the prospect that he was the reason for Green's very public demise. I would bet that the notion is a ruse, and it being set up for Anna to question her husband and make us all wonder if he did it and if so would we justify it and will others around him think that way. I'm actually more inclined to think now that Bates killed his ex-wife Vera than that he was truly responsible for Green's death. I'm glad Green got his so to speak, but I'm not sure what purpose it serves to make us wonder if Bates was responsible for yet another person's suspicious death.
I think we all knew Rose's love affair with Jack would be fleeting. It was interesting to see Mary explain to him that while she doesn't see his race to be an issue personally, she knows what their relationship would mean to others in their society and that ultimately, while Jack may love Rose, Rose is more likely just as interested in sticking it to her mother as she is to truly want to be with Jack. It's a bit of a shame the whole race issue being what it was back in those days because I liked Jack as a character but it's unlikely we will see much more of him now that he and Rose are through.
I'm glad Daisy finally, with Mr. Mason's help, was able to show some growth in expressing to Alfred that she did in fact love him but she's over it and they can part as friends and she was firm on it even after he realized finally how foolish he was to want to pursue Ivy when Daisy was the one who was there for him all along. I was feeling proud like Mrs. Patmore that Daisy showed such restraint and maturity. Nice that they finally have allowed her to grow up rather than continue to pout over Alfred liking Ivy and not seeing her for what she was.
I like the cute little relationship that might be brewing between Molesley and Baxter. I couldn't tell though if she was putting Thomas off on the gossip because she realizes now with Molesley she doesnt' have to be in Thomas' pocket or if she just didn't want to say anything in front of him but might tell Thomas a few things later... anyone else leaning one way or another on this?
I saw a glint in Bates' eyes as he left for his day off, but it may have been a glint of happiness, like hes preparing a surprise for Anna.
Maybe Daisy will still have her day and get her man.
Mary was very wise to decipher Rose's TRUE reason for dating Jack.( Wow, hes a goodlooking guy!)
Im still fonder of Gillingham.
Molsely has a love interest. She seems to care and not pretending.
I have to agree with SnailAway. I am more fond of Gillingham, though I think Blake would do her good nonetheless. I, too, was so happy to see her bond with George. It is a far cry from the season premiere when she referred to him as an orphan. I like Mary this season. She is really growing up and to me becoming more likeable.
I must be the only one who thinks Bates did do it. Though even if he didn't I think he should have. Green got what he deserved. Accident or not.
Well, now that Rose is out of the picture I'd like to put my name in hat, lol. Tis a shame that ended. I think if Rose had been a more mature they would have mad a lovely couple despite the ridicule they would have faced. Finally Mr. Moseley finds love. I could not be more happy for him. Gosh, I hope that actually works out for him and Thomas doesn't screw it up for him.
I don't understand why Edith won't tell her parents. The grandmother all ready knows and I think she is the toughest to please. If it is Robert she is worried about I think he has been way more open minded and I think he will support her no matter what. I don't want to see Edith of to Switzerland. We already lost Sybil and I'd like to keep Edith around. I think Gregson will come back. Edith needs a happy ending for once.
Mary is a much better person now than she ever was. She's showing she's more than just some period piece version of Victoria Beckham. I think it's the first time we've seen her care about anything. save for her relationship with Matthew. Plus it's nice to see her have more involvement with the estate rather than just worry about what clothes she will change into for tea. Neither Blake or Gillingham equal Matthew, but neither of them have made me want to root against them winning Mary over either.
TheWhip, with regard to Edith, I would think the toughest person for her to explain her situation to will be her father. Robert's shown himself to be a stodgy SOB in most matters, especially those involving his daughters. I think Violet's slightly more progressive, granted she would always prefer things to be the way they always used to be in the good ol' days, but she's far more understanding to the changing times, plus a woman of her age has seen and heard a lot in her time and probably has many secrets she will take to the grave because certain things aren't spoken about in "polite society" but it didn't mean they never happened. I'm sure someone like Violet would've known of someone in Edith's predicament long before her granddaughter. She never flinched when she learned about Mary's affair with Pamuk and how he died in her bed, after all...
Still, Edith ought to come clean with her parents. I would think with all they have done to keep Tom from leaving with Sybbie they'd want to figure out a way to keep Edith and her child with the family, even if it meant a quickie wedding or sending her away briefly to return with the child later and say she had gone off to get married and then lost her husband and is returning as a "widow" just to save face if need be. Snail, I think given that she's about 5 months along and hasn't seen Gregson in as much time and no one can locate him and his trail has gone cold, Edith's thinking the worst because she has no reason to think better of the situation. If he was okay and truly does love her and wants to be with her, what would keep him from getting in touch with her?
I still feel like things weren't all wrapped up as much as I would've liked. And the big action of the episode was rather lame - Rose's ball and lettergate - but there were a few small positives.
I think the best moment of the episode was the end with Carson and Hughes holding hands wading into the water. I still hope those two crazy kids find some happiness together. And how about Daisy?! After her mature response to Alfred last week, she has herself an American valet suitor who was so taken by her he convinced his boss to want to hire her and she turned down the offer. Season 1 that girl was so desperate to be anything but the low gal on the totem pole and managed to work her way into the kitchen and now that she's an assistant cook she's more than content where she is. I'm sort of glad Ivy's going to go instead - I never saw much purpose in having Ivy around and Daisy is a better character (loved how she told Mrs. Patmore how even though she had no interest in the American guy it was nice just to get noticed a bit).
I'm still torn on Bates and Green. I still want to believe it's all a ruse but that ticket in his pocket sure is incriminating.. Why do they want us to think Bates would be capable of murder, even if it's justified?
I take it Mary is much more interested in Blake. When Gillingham told her that her assumption that Blake couldn't relate to her was wrong, it was like the one thing that kept her from considering him was gone. I think I may have to agree with the rest of you though, Gillingham does seem like a better guy overall. I think it's clear this is something that will continue into next season - perhaps another guy will even come into the mix, but if not, then I think she'll wind up with Blake. But I think Gillingham might be the better choice.
So Edith's decided to go with her original plan and have the pig guy adopt her daughter so she can keep her near... yeah, that won't backfire on her in some way. You know it will come out that the kid is hers next year for sure. And Gregson I take it was attacked by Nazis? I read a review earlier that begged to know why Mary gets suitors her own age despite being a widow with a child but Edith can only manage the guys who are much older and not even fully able to commit to her at that. I hope that, assuming Gregson's gone for good (why could they not resolve this? She was gone for 8 months, which means he's been missing for 13 months all in all) they find her someone closer to her own age for a change.
Can thy find something worthwhile for Thomas to do besides snoop on people and be a tattletale? Does he think that telling Robert about Tom bringing the teacher lady around the house for a look see gives him a leg up on Branson somehow? Robert should've just shot his claim down without even questioning it - who is his under butler to question what Tom was doing with someone in the house?!
I could go on, but I'm sure this reply is lengthy like some of my last few posts so I'm going to stop for now and see what others thought of the episode, and season as a whole, before I say more.
Edith is playing with fire by going to get her baby girl in Switzerland and have the farmer raise her as his own. He was a very kind and considerate person. This is not acceptable behavior for 1922 and she will become the talk of the town. UNLESS baby daddy escapes the Nazi camp ( my thoughts ) and they quietly get married. Such drama for the times.
Bates is innocent. My thoughts is he is kind and loving and the audience is supposed to question his integrity. Not me.
Thomas is a nasty piece of work. Mosely has a love interest, yeah!!
I just loved the fashions for the times.
Disappointed in Shirley Maclaine. I did like the bro.
Loved this episode.
