Step Families Support Group
Traditionally, a stepfamily is the family one acquires when a parent enters a new marriage, whether the parent was widowed or divorced. This community is focused on many of the relationships and issues that may arise within stepfamilies where you may find answers from some members and you may help other members with their questions.
hey all, iam posting this in two groups. I wanted to writed it in this group, because my step mom, dad and I are going to be attending family therapy!! WOO HOO..
First, let me give you some background. My mom passed away when I was 12 (almost 24 now) and my dad raised my brother and I. He did the best he could and I give him alot of credit for it. He and I arent close and have tried to get close but growing up he yelled at ( my mom too) and hurt me with his yelling.. Never laid on a hand on me. I
feel like I cant talk to my dad because all he
does is raise his voice at me. I just shut down.
ANYWAY, my step mom has been in my life since i
was 16. I like her alot and we do get along for the most part. At times its hard.. we all live under the same roof..
Fast forward
There has been alot of stuff going on and I think we need to communicate better. The therapy is more of a discussion where Iam the co counselor and its just see where my parents are wrong and right LOL..
At first I didnt want to go because I have tried therapy with my dad and it didnt work. But I guess i should have an open mind to it.
Heres why iam writing.. i guess to share this and ask if you all went to therapy before with your step parents, kids etc.. how did it go? was it like?
I dont want a gang up session about me because I will walk out..I have done some things in the past that they didnt agree with but iam trying to move forward from it..

A good counselor will let everyone speak, will not let it turn into a "beat up session", and will step in when necessary. So far I have been most impressed with the co parent counselor. He stayed very neutral and tried to point out positives on both sides. It helped my ex and I work out some issues w/ out getting into attacking.
That said - not all counselors are created equal! We went to one before our divorce and she made me feel horrible every time I went there, obviously taking my ex's side.
So be sure you find a good one, that listens and steps in to help facilitate the conversation. I really think it makes all the difference. Its good to walk out of there feeling better then when you went in, not worse!
