I ended up in the driveway of some friends house. They found me passed out in my car with the lights on and the engine running. Most of the night is still a blurr to me.
When I looked in the mirror early that morning I didn't like what I saw. My hair a mess, my face and hands bruised from falling, my pants torn, and I was covered in dirt and puke.
I never wanted to see myself do what I did that night again. It's that visual image of me that changed something in me. When I had to have the knee operated on a few months later it only reenforced everything. It's been almost 13 months sober for me.
I now have a little over 10 months, an=m in the middle of my 4th step, feeling a little squirelly but alright.
By the Grace of God,my higher power- only divine intervention could have possibly saved me from my goal. It took me 36 hours to wake up, but I woke with a different vision.
He believes in me, loves me just as I am and must have one hell of a future planned for me.
Far be it for me to decide when I am done with this so called life. We weren't designed to orchestrate our arrival & departure times..
As a result, I was able to get through the arch of Step 3,surrender my life and will to my God and trust that he, in his infinite, divine wisdom, power and strength, has my life under his control and it will be far greaterthan anything I could have hoped or dreamed under my own charge.
I am nothing without God, and I would not be here today without his love for me.
The very least I can do to repay that love is to stay sober and let Him do his work in me- in HIS time, not mine.
Recently losing a beloved family member we had to go visit family and decided to take my mother with us. She is a bad alcoholic. I had 3 weeks of sobriety under my belt and it all went to hell in a handbasket. My mother got drunk became obnoxious and I had a few drinks to cope with her and the loss of our family member. My mother started saying horrible things and I lost it. I physically went after her, my husband had to get between us. Had I gotten ahold of her, I hate to say what would have happened. All the years of abuse I took from her as a child and even now as a grown women came out in a rage that was horrible. I am still very bruised and battered from my husband having to hold me down to control me. I scared the heck out of him, his family and myself.
Anyway, they called the cops. I found myself in the back of a police car with a VERY pissed of cop. I never said a word, kept my head down while he verbally abused and trashed me. It continued until we got to the hotel where my husband met us and my husband had to tell the cop to knock it off because he was saying horrible things to me. Not once did I say a word or look up in fear that he would hurt me (the cop).
I was not allowed back to the house for 2 days, my daughter was kept from me, it was HORRIBLE. I will NEVER touch alcohol again, it ALMOST destroyed my life.
I'm taking control back, have found a wonderful, supportive program and am FINALLY on the right track! :0)
I'm glad to have found this board and thank you everyone for sharing such difficult stories.
but this brings up a question... do you guys think that someone needs a really bad rock bottom to finally get the message????? my hubby had a pretty bad incident that spurred him to finally get sober (although an OD and an arrest didn't seem to do the trick before this last thing).
so really, what about those of us who don't have a catastrophic bottom???? how does it sink in that we need to finally get a grip on drinking???? knowing that you "might" hit bottom doesn't seem to be enough for me.
Then one day few months ago, i went to a councelling session, early in morning ,and id not drunk that day because i didnt have time.
That session opened a tiny gap in a window of oppurtinity in not drinking that day, and i clung on with all my strength.
Im still holding on few months later, but guess that windows opened a little more, so its getting bit easier to hold on.
I drang lots of times because of i felt injustice at my crimnal record, (i bit a police officer when drunk} serious offence here,
and even though it was 16 years ago , i am still blocked from most occupations i want to do,
i cant work with people ever again basically, even on voluntary basis, im not even allowed in my own kids school to help out!
Just from that one offence. It will never be removed from my record.
Now i have made decision to do other things in life and forget about what im not allowed to do,
and stop being angry about it,
I cant change the law, but can change my life and my kids, by not drinking or using drugs anymore.
