Single Parenting Support Group
Today being raised by a single parent is not uncommon. About three in ten children live in a single parent home. The most common type of single parent home is one with only a mother. However, single father homes are the fastest growing type of family situation; 60% growth in the last ten years alone.
I think the two most difficult things for me were being surrounded by people who didn't know how difficult single parenting can be. Isolation with seeming inclusion.
And, then there were the negative judgements I attributed to others, some of whom probably weren't even making such judgements (a defense mechanism based on my life experiences). This increased my sense of isolation.
Sorry, I honk these two interacted with each other. I can't narrow it down to one.
Totally feel free to avoid my pitfalls.
Best wishes.
Honk= think
So, what kind of changes can you expect going from being essentially a single parent in a relationship to being a single parent out of a relationship? Sorry, no clue.
I find it very different. I was also in a marriage where I felt I did the lion’s share of the work. And I was right. But the isolation of actually being alone takes it to a whole new level. Turns out, even if he only did 10%, taking on that 10% felt like a whole lot more because I was already carrying such a heavy load.
... and all of my friends are in two parent families. They want to be supportive but they just have no clue how relentless the grind is. I remember one time a friend saying, “oh! I’ve been single parent lung all week and it is exhausting!” Just before she asked me to babysit her 3 boys so she could go shopping alone. Her partner was on a business trip. She had been alone 3 days. I had been alone for almost a year and she had never once offered any help (and it wouldn’t have occurred to me to ask). She honestly didn’t see the irony ...
I felt pretty invisible after that.
