Scent irritation

Just read a post about being someone being sensitive to noise after RA and it made me wonder if my increasing inability to tolerate certain scents is part of RA or its meds?

I have been having increasing trouble at events with perfume - mostly worn by women but sometimes men - causing reactions. At one show recently I put paper towels over my face and leaned forward. At the end stuffed them into a jacket pocket.

Next morning they reeked of the offending perfume. Wonder if this is harming the wearer. Also is it harming me? I get a sore throat and nose and at one event a tightening in the chest area?

Anyone else?

Same here, D and S. Our eldest daughter has always had hayfever type reaction to strong perfume. I try to remember not to wear perfume when I see her but now I'm finding the same thing is happening to me (only since RA) Exactly, Buddha - an irritant with a reaction like an allergic reaction.

I also never had allergies prior to RA. Now I'm allergic to tons of foods and can't even wear new clothes without washing first or I get hives. I've had to ban certain things like Axe spray from my classroom since my eyes start getting red and itchy when the students spray it near me.

There's also TILT - toxin induced lack of tolerance. It's range of symptoms includes sudden food allergy onset, fibro, and RA type symptoms. Since I've used roundup and 2-4D for many years I wonder if that's what really started all of this bipolar immune system nonsense. Organophosphates are the trigger identified for TILT.

Strong scents are irritating even without allergies. They make me sneeze but I don't think it's actually an allergy. Lighter scents don't bother me at all. What I find most annoying is that I smell things that aren't there. It started years ago. I detected an odd odor in my house. It drove me nuts but no one else said they could smell anything. I tore that house apart. Cleaning everywhere! Still smelled that darn smell. Sort of a heavy motor oil type smell. My family started giving me that side eyed "oh-oh" look when I started demanding how in the world could they not smell it! It still comes and goes. I've stopped telling anyone about it. I got tired of getting that look that says this lady has really flipped her bucket. Bad enough from family but when the doctors start doing it..........
I just chalk it up to another weird thing and try to ignore it.

I don't think being sensitive to smells has to do directly with RA...my husband introduced me to how smells (perfumes/colognes/deodorant etc) can and does affect ones moods!
