Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
Riding my horses are my saving grace.
I do ride a bike, using hard soles, and riding on my heels. I've been doing it for 10 years, but had to stop because of the flares from the 2 med failures I have had since Feb. I really hope the new meds work, and I can start back on the trainer, and maybe be outside next summer.
Personally, I think you need to rethink running. There are lots of exercise activities you can do that don't involve pounding the feet and knees into the hard ground with the full weight of your body. Try swimming?
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, too!
Learning my new limitations has been the hardest part of this disease. Coming to terms with it is a long process and I'm not entirely there yet. Once upon a time I was an athlete. I can't run, skate, or do high impact dance anymore. Heck, I'm happy if I can walk to and from my car with only moderate pain. I walk MUCH slower than I did just a few months ago. I used to be a speed demon, I'm not used to having people twice my age walk faster than me without breaking a sweat.
I have yet to find aerobic activity that doesn't dramatically increase my inflammation and pain (when/if my meds are changed, I hope that I'll regain some mobility). I have found that I am able to do some strength training exercises and yoga if I do it when I feel OK, keep it short and gentle, and stop as soon as it feels like inflammation or joint pain might be worsening.
My best wishes to you. This disease is a beast.
I've spend the last two days recovering. It might be coincidence, but my MTX injection hit me much harder this week. The only reason I finally crawled out of bed at noon today was to take care of my animals.
Just some food for thought. I hope you get to see a rheumatologist soon.
