Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...
Prednisone usually is prescribed for acute pain and inflammation. It's a drug you love and hate at the same time. I have been on it for about 8 wks. I was in so much pain when I went to the Rheumy I was glad to take it. Now I want to get off it.
If you can manage the pain without it then don't take it. The methotrexate will take some time to start working. I have been on Methotrexate for about 6 wks. I still have to be on 15 mg of prednisone. I am going to try and cut back to 10 mg again. I have gain almost 10lbs since I been on it.
Methotrexate has it choice of side effects that I don't like. It seems we will have to take some kind of medicine that has undesired effects. I know some people do really well on the RA drugs and some don't. Take care. Hugs
I take Mtx. on a regular basis along with the other maintenance meds.

I hope your Rheumy also prescribed Folic Acid to take the day AFTER MTX and more frequent blood tests for the first few weeks to make sure it isn't affecting your liver.
I hope yourRA will respond to meds quickly and you get some relief.
Hugs
I know the side-effects are scary but the effects of RA are much scarier in my opinion.
I am glad I am off. I hope I don't ever have to take it again because I don't care for the nuisance side effects I got from it. (Thankfully I did not get anything health threatening). However I think there can be a time and place for prednisone.
I wish you all the best in getting your symptoms under control.
I take 8 MTX weekly and 5 mg prednisosne daily. Started with 10, then 7.5, 5, and tried 2.5, but ESR shot up, so sticking with 5 for a couple of years now.
