Rheumatoid Arthritis Support Group
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It is a disabling and painful condition which can lead to substantial loss of mobility due to pain and joint destruction. The disease is also systemic in that it often also affects many extra-articular tissues throughout the body including the skin, blood vessels, heart, lungs, and...

I went to the rheumatologist today for my first shot of Stelara, which will replace Humira for me. While I was there, during the general check-up part of things, I mentioned that for a good bit of the three months since my last visit, I had a really wretched cold that just would not let go. This was my first cold since being diagnosed two years ago - since I retired from teaching school, I just don't get many colds any more.
I brought it up at the appointment only because it just seemed to drag on and on, well past the usual ten days or two weeks that I would have expected, and I assumed that was my because of my compromised immune system. My husband was exposed to the same wonderful, beloved, snot-dripping grandbabies as I was, and usually he's out for a whiny two weeks while I might have a day or two of a runny nose. This was nearly four weeks.
The rheumatologist asked if I had discontinued the methotrexate while I was fighting the cold.
I had not, because a) I'm incredibly methodical about taking the meds as prescribed and b) I thought that the deal was that you contacted your rheumatologist while on MTX if you had an infection. And what I had was a common cold. The kind of thing that, if you go to your family doctor, they'd maybe give you something for symptoms but pretty much tell you that it needed to run its course, and that it would not respond to antibiotics. Thus - in my mind at least - not an infection.
She suggested that if I get another cold, I skip one dose of MTX.
Now, I'm a little confused. Was my definition of 'infection' inaccurate? I'm curious about others' experience with this sort of thing. It genuinely never occurred to me that what I was experiencing (and not to be gross, but we're talking clear mucus, coughing, itchy eyes, but mostly just fatigue) came under the category of Things To Call The Rheumatologist About.
(Also, for anyone who needs to know, Stelara shots don't hurt at all.)

I've been on high dose prednisone for pneumonia, and now I am slowly weaning. But lots of symptoms I don't like having, plus overeating has put at least 10 lbs on me. The food is "loud" as the GLP-1 users refer to it.Also pressured speech. Which comes out in my posts. Sorry I posted so much. I just need an outlet for my agitated and irritable brain. Just scroll on by my posts, if they are too...

I haven't been around in a long time. I am admin in a private group, and I would like to upgrade someone else to that position. I thought I knew how to do that, but the prompt has gone missing. Or is it not allowed to upgrade someone else to admin? I just find "ban and demote" under "Edit." I don't get notifications to DS anymore, but I wil come back in a few days to find out the answer. There...
There's a whopper of a cold going on here in southern CA now. And for most of us, it goes from viral to bacterial, as it did for me.
A good thing is to get scripts of the following from your doctor in case you come down with a cold or flu. Just hang on to them and get them replaced annually.
1. Tamiflu [if you have symptoms of flu]
2. Z pack for bacterial infections [if chest cold turns bacterial]
I don't have the time or patience for my doctors' office to call/fax in the scripts, which could take days. Best to have them on hand.
Probably won't make you feel better, but I'm down with a cold and bacterial bronchitis for 10 days now. I understand this can last up to 8 weeks. Lots of people in my neighborhood have/had it.
I also have COPD and cannot take cough suppressants or NyQuil, making it miserable for me.
However, I am ultra severe. I can't go off meds, or I will get damage. I went off mthx for one week, because my liver enzymes were climbing in the summer. It did the trick, the liver enzymes came down. But, a few days after I missed my injection day, I got bad tendon flares in my left hand and right knee. The right knee - from mid calf to the top of the knee is not only hurting, but worse!
I've gotten a nodule on my vocal folds which stopped me from speaking for 4 months, and ruined my singing voice. That was being off one week for surgery. I could go on and on.
Even when I had shingles that wouldn't go away, I refused to go off. One of my doctors finally put me on a month of Famvir, which targets shingles better than Valtrex, and it cleared up after 5 months. Looking back, perhaps that should have been the one time I went off? Although I got shingles 3 more times, and never went off, but those attacks weren't as bad as the initial one.
I guess it depends on your doctor, your RA and how well you heal. I had the weirdest thing ever happen to me in the last month. My husband got a terrible "man cold." He thought he was going to die! And it took 2 weeks for the worst to clear up, and he is still blowing his nose constantly. Well, for the first time ever, I didn't get it! He is the one who is usually better in 3 days! This time, it was me not getting sick at all. I figure I must have had the virus he had, and my body was immune?? I just can't figure out anything else!
About the joints being achy....mine are, too. But I attribute that to the higher precipitation we've had in the past week or so. Lots of misty mornings here. Even rained lightly last night. I think it's more about OA than RA. But who knows????
Hey neighbor! Oh I didn't know anything was going around? Feels very mild so far, I mean I totally fine going to work, obviously I don't want to infect anyone else but just saying I don't feel "horrible".
So do you feel that when you get a cold or flu the RA ratchets up a tad? I notice mine is bouncing around a lot, finger for 2 minutes, the gone, then a knee for 3 minutes, then gone, the part of my left foot etc, etc.
Okay well, I'm going to chalk it up to the cold!
Thanks!!
