By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Unprovoked PE-concern with Radiation from CT Scans
Hi all, I had an 'unprovoked' PE in my left lung early October 2018. They said there was no reason for it, but personally I think that it happened because I was sick with mostlikely pneumonia from early September and unable to walk up the stairs to bed so slept on the couch for about 12 days. I was hardly able to do much other than make it to the washroom. My pulmonologist has advised that due to the size of my clot 'monsterous', it will be 6 months + before it has cleared from my lung. My concern is that he wants me to do a 2nd CT scan (first done to diagnose it) early February to see if my lung is clear, but I am of the thought that perhaps I should just wait a bit longer for the 2nd scan as it has only been 4 months and I still have shortness or breath and pain. If the scan shows that my lung isn't completely clear then I will need a 3rd one later. Anyone had the same experience?????? any advice would be appreciated.

A low-dose chest CT scan exposes you to 1.5 mSv, and a regular-dose chest CT exposes you to 7 mSv.
Let's assume you're 40 years old for the sake of my example, and you are an 'average American.' This is already 120 mSv of radiation that you've been exposed to. Just by being alive. Add on 3 regular-dose chest CT scans, and now you're at 141 mSv. If you've lived your whole life in Colorado, and never had any air travel or x-rays or CT scans, you've still been exposed to 180 mSv over this same 40 year stretch. Nobody's being evacuated from Colorado due to radiation exposure.
And we haven't even taken into account any workplace exposure (CT and x-ray technicians, power plant workers, pilots, flight attendants, etc). A pilot or flight attendant is going to be exposed to more radiation from a 30 year career (just from their job) than you'd be from 18 regular-dose chest CT scans.
My numbers may not be exact, but they're close enough to accurate for the point I'm trying to make. I mention all this not to scold you, rather to ease your mind and help you feel a little less anxious about the CT scans.
