Stopping Xarelto for Procedure

Has anyone stopped Xarelto before a procedure before? I have to stop taking it today becasue I have a Right Heart Cath on wednesday early in the morning due to Secondary Pulmonary Hypertension from my PE. It's got me a little on edge to sy the least. My hematologist said to stop two days before the procedure. Anyone experience this yet? Any tips?

I haven't, but just from working in the healthcare field, I know it is not uncommon to stop a blood thinner whenever you are having a procedure. It can be very dangerous for your blood to be too thin when they have to make an incision for a procedure. Two days should not make a difference anyways, as it takes longer than that for the thinner to deplete your system. You should be just fine.

Thanks Ingermac. This can't be over soon enough! I know it's just a catheter, but it's creepy to me. I had a failed IVC filter attempt before, so catheters and I don't get along.

yes I had to stop Xarelto for two days to have a biospy. No problems and next week have to do the same again for a proceedure. Go well with the Cath.........

Does a person have to 'bridge' with Lovenox or similar while off Xarelto for a procedure?

Depending on the procedure, yes you would have to take the Lovenox shots.

Is that true if you're stopping xarelto? I thought that because xarelto leaves your system so quickly that you wouldn't need to bridge. I'm curious about that as well.

I was just looking at the Xarelto Web site and they list one of the benefits of Xarelto as "Eliminates the need for bridging with parenteral heparin or LMWH to oral therapy."

Their instructions for bridging (see http://www.xareltohcp.com/dvt-pe/dosing-and-administration.html) just say to stop Xarelto 24 hours before the procedure and restart 24 hours after.

That backs up what I thought ... that the half-life of Xarelto is such that injections wouldn't be necessary.
