I was on Warfarin, & when the treatment time period was up, stopped cold turkey. They said they don't taper off since wouldn't do any good with this kind of medicine due to how it works for the INR levels. Not sure if Xeralto works the exact same way, but I know it's not unusual to stop thinners if they think you are in the clear. I didn't have withdrawals at all, & was so happy to be off them!! My doc said I would only be considered "high risk" if I had a clotting disorder, & not because I clotted. It made me more mindful of moving around when traveling, & sitting at work etc, but otherwise just got on with my life & pray never happens again.

I was diagnosed last November and since then have been taking Eliquis. A few weeks ago my doctor told me I was clear to just stop taking them. I haven’t noticed anything weird, except my anxiety has increased bc I’m so scared I’ll have another clot.

I'm currently also on xeralto. Today was my first apple with my hematologist oncologist @nd he explained that I will be on this for at least six months and depending on my progress, symptoms, blood work, etc. It will determine if or when I can stop taking it. Did you discuss baby aspirin with your doctor? If I ever go off of Eliquis, I think that is my doctor's preference (instead of taking nothing at all). My PEs were also due to birth control and no other risk factors.

I was on 150 mg shots daily (lovenox) for a full year, and I stopped taking it "cold turkey". My clots turned out to be caused by cancer. When I was cancer free, my blood went back to normal. All indications were such that I had reached "normal" and my hematologist told me no more shots. I was thrilled and terrified. I am on baby aspirin for a year. I thought at least she would have put me on a full aspirin for 6 months and then baby aspiring, but I've been doing fine since last June.

I'm doing well. I had a scare a couple days ago. Went to the ER they did a CT scan but it was all clear. :)

Hi Sarah, after how many months you discontinued Xarelto. I was told i would need it for 6 months post my DVT and PE but its 9 months now i have been taking it and may be i would reach one year since there is residual clot in my leg.
I think if your D-dimer was negative, so there is nothing to worry getting off your anti-coagulation. With Xarelto, INR monitoring is not required so D-dimer test is enough i believe. But be watchful with any symptoms etc as you rightly visited the ER suspecting a scenario.

Interesting that your doctor just said to stop taking blood thinner. I am on Eliquis now since November 2017, and they want me to stay on it for life. I had blood clot 14 years ago and took coumadin and could not keep the INR monitor in my favor, so I just quit taking coumadin after 1 year, and had been fine for 14 years. I believe there is a push to keep people on blood thinners for life. Follow the money.

How long to stay on anticoagulants and whether or not to be on them long term depends on the extent of the clot, what may have caused the clot, your risk for future clots and the doctors’ own protocol. It’s not at all unusual to be on them for a limited time period.

I'm on xerelto since my PEs in Sept 2017 and the cause is unknown. All tests have done back good. Still some pain in left lung with deep breath. Hematologist says I can stop the xerelto in mid March, go back to see him in April but get blood work one week prior to appointment so he can check my numbers. Then one more follow up with pulmonary and hopefully all done with all of this. Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. I was told in the beginning they would treat for 6 months and then depending on how I was doing either stop blood thinners or review next steps if needed.

I was placed on Xerelto Oct 05, 2017 and told only for six months. At that time I was diagnosed with a PE. No one was interested in where it came from. I had just broken my ankle and three days later my husband had a Radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer. Because of these two events we were both fairly immobile which I attribute my blood clot too. Prior to all of these events I was on HRT, Estrodial, transdermal patch since Hysterectomy 10 years ago. After my diagnosis they immediately took me off my patch. So I am having Hot flashes even though I am using my doTERRA essential oils.
My Dr said no way to going back on HRT but agreed to abide by my Gyne's decision. I am awaiting that appt in 2 weeks. Now off of Xerelto, like some of you, a little nervous as to side effects, risks, etc from being off of the big "X". Also curious if anyone else is on HRT patches and has been in Xerelto? Is there life after Xerelto?
