Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Hi All,
I've had two bouts of multiple, bilateral PE's - one in 2009 and again in 2010. My lung capacity doesn't feel like it's totally back but it's getting better. Part of how it's getting better is that I've been practicing yoga and conscious dance. I'm building up my stamina again and enjoying the process.
I practice a really gentle yoga called Svaroopa that, like all yoga, focuses a lot on the breathe. Well, all this yogic breathing is wreaking havoc on my chest! The costochondritis has been constant for months. I feel it in my chest (mostly left side), back, shoulder & neck. At first I thought I was having a cardiac episode of some kind but doc says it's not. I can't carry a purse, steer my car with or sleep on my left side without a lot of pain.
So, what do I do? Give up yoga? I don't wanna! I love it!
If you have costo, I'd love to hear how you manage it. Heat or cold? Pain medication? Triggers or calming agents?
Thanks!

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
I had it a couple of years ago and it took months for the pain to subside. It really did. It hurt just to sit upright actually. Tylenol would take the edge off but it doesn't address the inflammation. You may want to talk to your doctor about pain management.
Otherwise, I used heat and/or cold packs. I think too it's recommended to rest and avoid activities that cause pain and exacerbate the costochondritis, so that the inflammation decreases. So anything where you're doing deep breathing probably isn't helping your cause. But it's hard to give up something you love, although Costo shouldn't be a permanent condition.
And here is a stress-reducing habit I developed to sort of remind my body that it could give up producing the inflammation and pain; two of my doctors approved of this technique both as an anxiety reducer and as a costo therapy. Throughout the day, whenever I looked at my computer clock, I would pause to take one very slow, chest-expanding breath--and hold it for just a few seconds before releasing very slowly. Yes, it hurts, sometimes more than others. But stretching that area gently but regularly really will help. I don't know why the yoga is too much, but that is what your body is telling you so it is right to listen. I still use the clock-breath practice, even when I dont have costo; stretching those muscles can make them more flexible and less likely to flare up. Be good to yourself, and let's keep supporting each other in this wonderful community.
