O.K. to take supplemental estrogen now??

I think this idea that estrogen via birth control or hormone replacement is inherently bad has always been short sighted. It's true; estrogen is important due to other health risks associated with decreased or insufficient levels of estrogen. So to me, it comes down to women doing their homework and weighing the risk/benefits and deciding for themselves what makes the most sense for them.

Even though I've had two blood clotting events, I still support the use of estrogen based birth control and hormone replacement if a woman chooses to go that route.

I was told by my Doctor that since I had PE's that I was never to take any type of hormone like that again. But she did mention something about bio identical . Not sure about that so I will have to look into it.

I was taking the bioidentical progestrin for 2 months before I had my
clots. My Doc couldn't say if that had caused the clots.

I decided to stay away from an form of estrogen. I was diagnosed with estrogen positive breast cancer 10 years ago and then the PE 4 years ago. Now my 23 year old daughter is on a low dose birth control pill. But I tested negative for the two known breast cancer genes and she tested negative for Lieden Factor V. So it is a personal choice.

Tian, I would be very careful with bio-identical hormone replacement: they still contain hormones and could still heighten your risks for another clotting event. May I suggest http://www.hystersisters.com/ ? That website helped me terrifically when I had my hysterectomy and you will find tons of information about hormone replacement therapy.

I agree with rmb that, in itself, estrogen is not a bad thing: it is actually good for our eyes, our skin, our heart, etc. The only time it gets bad, is if you have a risk for clotting. Millions of women take estrogen supplements, either through birth control or hormonal replacement theraphy without having any issues.

It's all a matter of balance.

They won't even let me take bio-identical therapy. I'm having a hysterectomy on 8/26 and they are leaving my ovaries because I can't take any kind of hormone replacement therapy

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
