Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

That's according to a response made by Dr. Jack Ansell (a medical and scientific adviser for The National Blood Clot Alliance)
Below is his response to an article that promoted the newer anti-coag (I believe it was dabigatran ) as the first choice for atrial fibrillation.
NOTE: for AF---nothing is mentioned about DVT/PE

New Oral Anticoagulants Should Not Be Used as First-Line Agents to Prevent Thromboembolism in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation

Dabigatran etexilate, an oral direct thrombin inhibitor, when dosed at 150 mg twice daily in the Randomized Evaluation of Long-Term Anticoagulant Therapy (RE-LY) trial, produced a significant reduction in stroke or systemic embolism compared with warfarin in selected patients with nonvalvular AF (1.11% versus 1.69%; relative risk, 0.66; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.530.82; P

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.

Though Xarelto (Rivaroxaban) and Praxada (Dabigatran) have since been approved for their respective treatment, we still don't have a reversal agent nor do we know the long term safety of these medication.
This is the perspective that Dr. Ansell took in his article. Those I know who are taking the medication for off-label treatment for VTE prevention, they are happy with their choice (Dero from his group is one of them).
****Don't take the article for face value. Jack was asked to write a counter-point to the article, which is not necessarily the position he supports****
Hmmm-mm.
Do you know who asked him to write that counter-point?
