The anticoagulation clinic recommended the Roche Coaguchek before I left their care. The doctor prescribed the HemoSense InRatio, which has sufficed. Once or twice a year I run it side-by-side with a draw from the doctor's office. It comes out between dead-even and different by 0.3, which will happen between any two tests.

The AC lab visits were $140 each so the meter paid for itself within 8 months. Insurance paid either way, but for those of us who ultimately have always paid for everything that makes little difference. Other savings, such as no wait times, no backing out of work assignments to make clinic appointments, and saving a job are more immeasurable.

Most insurance will cover part of it, but you should call your insurer to confirm.

It usually falls under "Durable Medical Equipment." You should check with your insurance folks to see what they will cover.

My Insurance covered my monitor 100% under durable medical, Hehehehehe I had reached my catastrophic deductible by being hospitalized with a PE (only good thing that came out of having a PE)
Anyway my doctor wrote a prescription and I went through Alere Home medical out of Florida, They set everything up for me including the reporting my PT/INR fax to my doctor within minutes of when I call my results into them. I have an InRatio 2 and it is very accurate. I love having it and having the convenience of it. I really can't say anything bad about my machine or the company I deal with.

Thanks for the post about home monitoring, It reminded me I needed to check my Protime, Today it is 4.6, the company I called my results into immeadiatley faxed the results to my doctor and also forwarded my call to my Doctors clinic so I could remind them of the dose I am on and find out what recommendations they want me to change my dosing to. I got my answer immeadiatley and am merrily on my way.

With a 4.6 INR, you need to helmut-up, Ferr, considering your klutzy history!

The strips are about $6 each for INRatio2, and they won't sell you a few at a time, so when it is time to get more strips, after the ones that come with new machine are used, it will cost you dearly if you have UHC. They want $178.22 from me before they send me a refill, so i am going to have to go back to the Dr for mine until i can cough up the money for strips. I love the machine though, it is a lot more convenient, no driving to Dr or clinic or missing work and getting behinder :)
