By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
Finally a bit of light in this whole ordeal. I went into the hospital August 18th with my PEs and DVT and when they did the genetic testing I came up positive in Factor II (pro thrombin 20210) and Lupus Anticoagulant. I was told by my awesome hematologist that the LA could be false positive so we'd test again in 10-12 weeks to see. Just had it done again a couple weeks ago and found out yesterday that it came back negative this time! Super psyched to finally have some positive news. That means I'll just be doing Warfarin for 1 year (because of the size and extent of my PEs) instead of for the rest of my life. I'm an ice hockey player so outside of just not wanting to be on warfarin forever this means now I'll get to play hockey again some day. I had really mentally prepared myself for it to be positive so this is pretty exciting.
Things have been pretty dark for the last 3 months, even though most of that I've kept in my own head - it's nice to feel that weight lifted a little bit.
