drink question

I was out for dinner and wanted to order a drink, a cosmo, and realized it has cranberry juice in it so I opted not to have it and just got a glass of wine. Not sure how much cranberry juice is in it, maybe not that much, but is that ok to have some cranberry juice when on warfarin? I hate to think I can't have cosmos anymore...

Like anything else on warfarin, I can't imagine that a small amount of cranberry juice every so often would be a problem.

On the other hand, my FIL started drinking tons of cranberry juice last year. A few weeks later, his INR was through the roof. So, maybe don't go with daily gallons, but a little in a cosmo probably wouldn't cause an issue.

(And, if you're really worried, get your INR checked a couple days later!)

At one point while on warfarin I couldn't stand not having cranberry juice anymore, so I had a small juice glass (maybe 4 or 5 ounces) of cranberry juice most days for a few weeks. No noticeable results on my INR. So the amount that's in a cosmo shouldn't cause problems; I wouldn't have 10 of them though ;) And like Toss said, get your INR checked a few days after if you're worried.

As above, there have been some recent studies (last couple of years) that drinking cranberry juice doesn't really affect your INR (small/moderate amounts).

There are also the odd report which states that excessive intake can be problematic: A couple of cocktails will probably affect you more from the alcohol, rather than the cranberries.

2 oz of booze is the typical amount in a normal size martini. A cosmo usually just has a splash of cranberry juice. So we're not talking about much volume here on either account. My INR has never been problematic from booze or cranberry juice or a combination of either.

Man, a nice ice cold vodka martini sounds good right now.
