Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

As some of you might remember, in January I was taken off warfarin because of a hematoma and they put in a filter. I went on my first trip ever....to San Diego a couple weeks ago. On Tuesday, I had some pain in my leg, so I went to the ER. They did a VQ scan and ultrasound of the leg and found nothing. So, I thought I was just being over cautious because of 4 prior PE. On Thursday the pain in my leg was worse and had developed a short, red line midway in my right calf. Back to the ER thinking it was a skin infection I have had prior.
After a short time and another ultrasound, the P.A. came back in and said..."you have 2 clots...a superficial one where the red line is and one DVT. Since I was no longer on warfarin, I have just spent six days in the hospital on heparin and back on warfarin, to get me "therapeutic".
Of course, they all blame the fact that I did not take frequent breaks on the trip to San Diego. Which is my own fault. So, the lesson for me is we always have to be on guard and never think we will never have another clot.

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
I thinks some people are just prone to clotting for no apparent reason. And so they just need to be on anticoagulants. Are you now on warfarin long term or some other anticoagulant?
I wish you well!
I would follow up with your doc on when you can start being active. I personally think it's good to get moving soon after your clot, but you want to make sure the timing is right on that.
Also, one of my primary care physicians is pushing me back out to drive a trucks again. The same doctor in the ER who told me to never drive again is now telling me I'm fine to drive long haul again. The real fact of the matter is that most doctors don't know what they're talking about. They say one thing, then another thing, and then another.
Lynne I'm really proud of you for just putting this in proper perspective and continuing to plan for other trips and if your doc gives you the ok to start being active again in a week, do it. DVTs and superficial clots can be painful during that initial recovery and I think that scares people so they don't try to do much. But just do what you can within reason. I think sitting around too long is detrimental to DVT recovery in the long run.
