By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Coughing up blood after PE

Hi. I was diagnosed with a PE last week. Had a DVT about 10 years ago, both unprovoked. I was sent home stable after less than a day. Oxygen and pulse are fine and generally feeling okay all things considered. But I keep coughing up small amounts of blood. This is especially true in the mornings. My GP doesn't seem overly concerned, but I find it rather unsettling. Have others experienced this as part of a PE, and if so how long did it last.

I didn't but I was told that it might happen. I would probably go back to the doctor if it lasts more than another week.

Yeah it didn’t happen to me either but I was told it could happen. It don’t think it’s supposed to last real long so I agree if it continues for more than another week or two to bring it up to your doctor again.

Thanks notsopatient and rmb. Still going on now and think I will keep bringing it up with my GP. Been experiencing the blood in phlegm symptom for over a week now.

I would give it another week. Unless it is a significant volume of fresh (bright red) blood. You may be coughing up bits of old blood for a while.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
