By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

Causes of PE

hi everyone,


I had a PE on February 14 - caused by birth control pills. I had no injuries, wasn't sitting for 5+ hours, no surgeries, etc. 


I have been tested for all genetic clotting disorders- all are negative. 


I had an ultra sound done to see if I have any masses on my ovaries or abdomen- nothing found.


Has anyone here had a PE caused solely by birth control pills?


Has anyone here found a rare cause that was not initially tested combined with the pill that caused their PE?


Any insight would be great!

Sometimes there is no specific identifiable cause. There is a lot that is still being learned about blood clots. There may be genetic clotting factors that have yet to be discovered.

I think for a lot of women I've seen I this group over the years, their only risk factor for clotting was birth control.

Hi,

I had no other risks other than birth control. I was on Nuvaring.

All of my genetic testing and everything came back negative. My hematologist did stress what rmb said about some things have yet to be discovered with clots.

Birth control and dehydration was the cause of mine. Or so the doctor's think. But a couple of my blood tests came back as undetermined.

Clots form and dissolve in our bodies all the time. Sometimes we get unlucky and it hits an important spot like the lungs or the brain, but most of the time it just dissolves away again on its own. It would be reassuring to be able to answer the question of why but the reality is that in the case of clots the 'why' is often nothing more than random chance....

My PE was caused by birth control pills and smoking cigarettes combined.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
