Birth control AFTER pulmonary embolism?

Hello everyone.


I have a question specifically for women who have had PE/DVT. Basically: after your PE, did you ever take any kind of birth control pill again? If so, what pill did you take? And how did you respond to it?


I had my PE years ago and at the time I was warned several times by several doctors that I could never take the birth control pill again. Then a couple of years ago one of my doctors said that I could take this one type of pill: the progesterone-only pill (aka: minipill).


I read about it and wasn't very convinced. But now I decided to try it and it's been pretty awful. I started taking it on day 1 of my period/cycle and basically I've had a heavy flow period for 2 weeks now. Not to mention the side effects: bloating, nausea, dizziness, headaches, depression. I'm not sure if this will change with time or if different brands of the minipill give off different effects. 


If you were taking any birth control pill before your PE could you say what brand it was?

Any pill with estrogen is a huge nono. I take progesterone ironically to stop my horrific anticoagulant bleeding and it works like a charm now. My first cycle was much like you described though so I would stick with it. I can't remember what brands I used to take before, it's been a while.

My doc said I could never take estrogen again, & I haven't tried anything else since.

My obgyn was ok with me using the Merina IUD which has progesterone, but I opted to go hormone free so I went with the Paraguard IUD. Makes my periods heavier but other than that, I’ve been happy with it. I’ve had it for several years.

I was on Nuvaring before. I stopped using anything for a few months, and in that time, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Because of that, I had to start using something to regulate my periods. I was put on the minipill. I'm not excited about using it. I haven't had terrible side effects. I just don't want to be on anything.

    We all have 24 hours in a day.  How we spend these hours is important.  Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do.  Gonna have to work on that.Your turn.  Tell me another truth.
