By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.
This one hit me out of the blue. I thought it was just fluid overload from my heart. But when I went to the ER day after Christmas they discovered my INR was low and consequently I now have had pulmonary embolisms 4 times now. I spent the last six days get my INR therapeutic again along with a heparin drip. Now, I live with my parents and the house is bigger and I just got home tonight and I am not doing well. I developed a pulled muscle from twisting in the wonder hospital bed and coughing. And tonight I can hardly make it from the bed to the kitchen.
So, the new game plan is I will need to stay closer to INR of 3 and deal with the bleeding.

The few times I've had to be on prednisone, though, we definitely went for a roller coaster ride!
Of course, if you need it, you should take it. Just keep an eye on your INR a little closer for a while.
