I'm not completely sure I understand everything you're asking, but it is possible to take antibiotics while on warfarin when it's necessary. Probably not a bad idea to double check and make sure there's an infection, though. But if you do need to be treated, then call your coumadin clinic if possible prior to even taking the antibiotic - usually that allows them to anticipate the change in your INR (which will normally go up if you don't make adjustments), they'll probably lower your dose a little and have you come in to get your INR checked a few days after starting the antibiotic to see where you're at, then they may or may not have to tweak it a little from there. Just keep the coumadin clinic informed and work with them, and let them decide how to adjust your coumadin dose around the antibiotic. It's not too big a deal really, as long as you deal with the additional medication before starting and they should be able to avoid any big swings in INR.

Hi, not sure if I know what you're asking. Do you mean is there a link between warfarin and bladder infections, or just if anyone had to deal with both at the same time?

I've not had to treat a bladder infection while taking warfarin, but I've been on antibiotics for other stuff while on warfarin. Some antibiotics interact more with warfarin than others, but you just need to monitor your INR more closely.

Ah, yes, I rambled on some. I was asking about antibiotics in general with warfarin. Bactrim does have some nasty side effects, but other antibiotics are better. I'll find out next week after the lab if in fact an infection and go from there. Thanks much!

My doctor put me on Keflex (cephalexin) for treatment of UTI while on Coumadin. You might want to ask her if she'd o.k. that IF you have no circumstances that would preclude that. (I, of course, don't know your entire medical history!)

But of course wait for the test results, which I'm guessing is a culture to find out just what bacteria is causing the problem.

Bactrim is the same as Septra (Trimethoprim and Sulfamethoxazole) and it has given some people some horrible side effects. But not all people of course.

I've been on and off antibiotics for months due to sinus issues. Usually, I just let my primary know what I'm taking (my ENT usually prescribes) and we keep an eye on my INR for a few days until we know how it'll change. Takes a little extra monitoring, but worth it to get rid of persistent infections!

I also have been on antibiotics whilst on warfarin. Was on keflex, Ceclor and ciproxin for pneumonia for about 3 months. It surprisingly seemed to lower my INR. I wouldn't worry too much just get ur INR checked regularly when ur on it- I was only weekly blood tests.
