Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

You've had 5 separate clotting events and they're just NOW keeping you on coumadin for the rest of your life? Usually, after a second clotting event they recommend long term coumadin Glad you are ok!
There are several of us here who've had more than one clotting event with no definitive explanations, so know you're not alone in that. I assume you've seen a Hematologist and have been tested for genetic clotting disorders.
One thing. I noticed on your profile you have a couple of different medical conditions. Note that some inflammatory diseases and autoimmune diseases can increase your risk for blood clots. So it may be a couple of risk factors that you have that may be not necessarily be the direct reason for your clots, but just have made you more prone to clotting.
So yeah, like you said, you take your meds, get your INR tested as needed, be mindful of symptoms and live your best life!
I'm also surprised that you've just now become a lifer on coumadin. Usually they do that after your second (or third, in my case) clotting episode. Sounds like you're a resilient gal!
As a lifer, you could consider getting a home monitor for your INR, so you don't have to go to the lab every week. It does make life a little bit easier and might be worth checking with your doctor to see what he/she thinks.
and be your cheering section when you might be feeling down.

I am also a lifer. Only diagnosed with PEs once and they couldn't find the source of the clot. Found out I am Factor V Leiden positive, so am now a lifer.
