Pulmonary Embolism Support Group
By far the most common form of pulmonary embolism is a thromboembolism, which occurs when a blood clot, generally a venous thrombus, becomes dislodged from its site of formation and embolizes to the arterial blood supply of one of the lungs. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, pain during breathing, and more rarely circulatory instability and death.

It was 2 years ago this week that my pulmonologist told me to stop taking warfarin. I was scared. Three weeks later the doctors rescanned my legs to make sure I wasn't clotting and then ran the barage of blood tests looking for clotting disorders. All tests came back negative. The doctors concluded that my PE's were caused by my one month stint on birth control pills. Ironically, I was put on birth control pills to shrink an 8 cm. ovarian cysts... the cyst went away but I ended up with PE's!
I just wanted to check back in with all of you and let you know that I'm still clot free! My hope is that this will encourage those of you just starting out on this incredible journey of PE recovery.
The anxiety, the physical pain, the exhaustion, the fear, all of this consumed my life for a time, but I want to let you know that there is healing and hope and brighter days ahead for each of you.
Today I focus on eating well, staying hydrated (I drink lots and lots of water), and I focus a lot on my mental and spiritual health. All of these have been the best medicine for me.
In some weird way, my PE event made me a better, stronger, more compassionate person than I was before.
I wish all of you brave PE survivors good health, good news, and a speedy recovery. I keep all of you in my prayers.
Take good care of yourselves, Lisa :)

We all have 24 hours in a day. How we spend these hours is important. Watching a little bit of a video about how sitting affects us made me aware of how much sitting and laying down I do. Gonna have to work on that.Your turn. Tell me another truth.
Really so happy for you, I hope things keep getting even better!
They think mine was from birth control but I will have the genetic testing after 6 months & hopefully come off of coumadin! This gives ms hope that it was just the bc.
I'm so happy for you & thanks for sharing!
@ Cubbie - My doctors took me off warfarin after having been on it for 6 months. They knew that 5 weeks prior to my PE diagnosis I had been on birth control pills for a month, so they had a theory that the hormones caused my clotting. After coming off of the warfarin they did the clotting disorder testing (although some of the disorders can be detected while you are on blood thinners).
Now that I am off of blood thinners, my doctor has me take a baby aspirin everyday. I also take a B vitamin complex supplement, simply because during my PE recovery it was discovered that I had a B-12 deficiency. (that's a whole other story!!)
My heart and lung function tests were all normal so I no longer see a pulmonologist. I see my primary care doctor yearly and he runs the standard blood panel tests.
As far as diet and exercise goes, I eat healthier now than I ever did before. The PE's made me aware of how vulnerable and how strong my body is. I eat whole foods now, very rarely do I eat processed foods. This is just my choice. The doctors didn't tell me to, it just makes me feel better. I make a conscience effort to stay hydrated. I drink a lot of water. And for exercise, I try to walk each morning a couple of miles.
Cubbie, I wish you all the best in your recovery. Getting answers to our questions is a mission that each of us undertake when we are going through this. I am so glad you found this support group. :) Take good care of yourself.
It''s good to hear that people do come out of the other side of this! Keeps me positive that hopefully things will improve for me. Glad to hear you're doing well.
