There seems to be alot of fear among addicts in the beginning stages of sobriety concerning annonimity and with understandable reasons.
Depending on where you work, if your employer discovered you had a drug problem. you could lose your job. Also, many families lack empathy because they don't understand the underlying reasons which predispose someone to become an addict in the first place. You will find that all drug counselors are recovering addicts themselves. It seems like we are the only ones who understand, having been there and done that. We can be much more empathetic.
Usually the first stop for one just quitting is your local hospital detox. In my hospital, the detox ward computers are separate from the main computers. any info concerning you is locked up like fort knox. I remember my first day there, well it was in the evening and we didn't get a chance to finish all the paperwork. I just wanted to get some sleep. My wife called and wanted to talk to me. I hadn't yet filled out that form which tells hospital personnel who I wish to take calls from and who I dont want to speak to. The nurse told my wife that he couldn't tell her if I was a patient there and he couldn't tell her if I wasn't. Boy was she pissed. She ended up calling the police who called the hospital CEO but got the same result. I had to apologize to her the next day.
After detox I went into an IOP (intensive outpatient treatment program) I had my choice of three diferent classes, morning noon and night. I chose evening. After I graduated from my IOP I had 3 months of relapse prevention group counseling, once a week.
I now attend 12 step meetings and at the end of every single meeting is the annonimity reminder, "What you see here, stays here!" And to my knowledge, that trust has never been broken!

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...

I am human and I make mistakes but if I said something wrong, I would have prefered to hear about it at the time and not a year later, because I cant correct it.
