I rarely even slow down for small towns in my wilderness wanders. I get my provisions in urban centers and keep my car doors locked as I drive through the small towns on my way to the wilderness areas. ALL of my kiddie whorehouse dramas were staged in and around small towns. I trust them as far as I trust the Corporate Agriculture teams that are currently running most of today's farms. Today's small towns have got the brightest lights, bitter divorces and consumer fights. Downright mean to my senses.
But here I am, holed up in small town, USA.
I subscribe to the biology theory that the "Four F's" organically bypass the intelligence centers altogether. Intelligence to slow to respond quicker than a threat to survival. I was still in full flight mode when I landed here. I did not even realize until I got a charming small town snub with my coffee this morning in an international chain store this morning.

A dog's tail never lies. My support dog says we should move on. Packing now.
Suburbs of the modern variety are ant farms deigned to keep ants from meeting each other.
Rural USA varies so wildly it may as well be a tenement in Manhattan, whic is pretty much how I see urban US life.
Small towns? Never lived anywhere else. Where I am now is, to me, a city, but is considered by many to be "small" b/c the county's whole population barely hits 100K. To me, it's overwhelmingly paved and peiple-infested.
That said, I've had small towns that were fine and small towns that made me want to change my species.
Life as exposure therapy? Oh boy I hope not....
But it's in one of those towns like the kind you're rightly afraid of. Holy cow, these folks are scary. The contradictions between their professed church-going beliefs and their actual behavior don't bother them at all. Yeah, you got it--life here for me is permanent exposure therapy.
You're right about the four F's and how they bypass logic every time, too. I get one of my F's triggered before I know it every day.
Stay safe, arfie.
Landed in Vicksburg. Have a contact in the Army Corps of Engineers office here. Hotel bill is paid through Monday night. We will see which way the wind is blowing Tuesday morning.
Sure wish I had my "tramp kit." That would be the camp gear I keep packed and ready to pull out of the closet at a moment's notice. Lo-o-o-ong story what happened to that. Not much in the mood to tell it.
Thanks for the support, guys.
Vicksburg has nice river access.
To my awareness, the Chesapeake wetland restoration network holds the most dynamic and global protectors of nature in the world. May the wind rise to meet their wings.
I have different reasons for finding conservative small towns unfun.
...I don't behave.
I'm too friendly, too weird, too queer, too awkward, too Not A Good Babtist, too tacky, too vulgar, too funny...
And I'm too tired to waste all my energy acting normal to make them happy, so I'm me.
That's not my problem, it's theirs...
But I still don't like getting sneered at by people too scared to be themselves because " what will people think?"
And in small towns, being thought poorly of can mean lack of employment.
...How anyone can stand that sort of crap and why do they do it to each other? UUUGH!
