My people phobia remains fairly intense, despite my decades of therapy work. I am afraid of ALL people TYPES. I still spend far more time with animals than with humans. For the most part, I don't even feel like it needs fixing. I will never be the Belle of the Ball, but I feel like I am in good, sustainable company among my critters. The humans who take the time and energy to find me there are even more tolerable when they leave their civilized manners at the gate. Animals don't care which symbols are on the paper you use to wrap your packages. Neither do I. I have preferences, but preferences are not primal needs.
For the most part, I don't feel like it doesn't need fixing, but evidence still comes up often that I, too, am one of those nasty people critters. Humans are a social species. People need people.
The headway I have made so far with my people phobia has come through "Tolerance building exercises." My term for it. . . "Exposure Therapy" is the closest I have come to an official name for it, but the vernacular from the Social Tolerance publications resonates better within my own, strictly personal needs. It be cultured "Society" I am afraid of. I think. Fear is such a distorting emotion. . . Fear makes it hard to see the forest through the trees.
Anybody have ideas on how to build Social Tolerance? Or even good names for what I am trying to nail here?
Random thoughts and opines welcome, as well.

My day...today...misplaced my debit card...didn't realize it until I got to the register after shopping to a full cart. Used a different debit card and pulled apart everything looking for missing debit card before I left parking lot. Got home, dropped keys. So now I have a missing debit card, missing keys. A full cartload to unload and put away. I got everything put away.Dumped purse for a...

I think the principle of Connectedness can play a vital role in our wellness; however, that need not always be to other people...as you demonstrate, animals are very therapeutic.
Consider pursuing Social Tolerance only to the degree that it adds to YOUR wellness, my friend.
My own wellness is the Catch 22 to my social intolerance, John. In fearing humans, I am fearing myself and all too often feeding hypocrisy in denying my own human traits.
Not interested in being the Queen of the Quincenera. Just looking for the inner-peace and maybe even the privilege of an integrated human family. In-law politics are the most dangerous oil slicks I am skidding on these days.
As far as I can tell, these bonds are like bridges, and the best are thoughtful, maintained, and constructed with care. Others are built because we need to get across a river in a hurry and may not last. Bad metaphor. But even the best-built best-engineered best-etc. bridges can have issues, and I for one get tired of feeling like the only person on the Work Crew. Which is usually my big red flag I need to express my discontent *carefully*. Half the time at least It seems that the problem is not the bridge but the fact I am scared to use it. Protracted metaphor, but it's how I currently visualize the matter to get through it.... Mostly b/c I drew a nightmare of falling bridges and there it was.
Blessings as you sort, Arfie. My avi is non-human, but I alas am. Da*n it.
This one might JUST be a bonafide conundrum. Not all questions have answers.
