I was surprised, even mystified, the first time I heard "Thunderous Silence" presented as an oxymoron in an English Lit class. The Silent Treatment was a standard punishment in my birth family. When 11 children go silent all at one time, it is Thunderous Silence defined. The silence was deafening. When I explore the possibility that my hearing problems could be psychosomatic, I can easily believe that much of that psychosis was a direct result of The Silent Treatment.
Later, in psychotherapy, my pros seemed pretty unanamous and adamant that The Silent Treatment is one of the harshest forms of Emotional Abuse. The greatest violence one human can inflict on another is to disregard them, altogether.

Coupled with the psycho-ticks of my unreliable hearing, my shifts on the hospice care rotation required frequent breaks to step outside and make some noise, whether to assure myself that my birth family was still 1800 miles away or that no, I had not, as I have long feared, finally gone stone cold deaf.
Indoor silence scares me. . . I love outdoor silence, but it is not really silent. Nature has a rich, musical repertoire which is forever on the airwaves.
