Is there any chance of buying a backup computer? Machines are guaranteed break, sooner or later, and there never is any accurate way to predict when that is going to happen. Murphy's Law predicts it will happen at the least convenient moment available. That prediction has been pretty accurate in my own 40 odd year computer career. It pays to have a backup, set up and ready to pick up the slack at a moment's notice.

I am so sorry that you are having a hard time. Muji my pastor one said never give up when the world come crashing in. Never quit. Please keep propelling. One day you will look back and might smile.

Also, I have been learning lately about technology and when they crash, how to react. But overall I am proud of you because you have a big heart, Muji and no matter what you are amazing.

So sorry this happened to you. The people at the funeral will likely be as understanding as your students. Still if there's anything you can do in the meantime to have a backup plan or to find out why it crashed (if possible) so you can determine if it needs something simple you can do to prevent a recurrence. But, having done whatever you can, know that the love and memories you share about your friend will be what carries you and the others through.

Perhaps now that they've approved you teaching remote and your personal one is crashing..... it would be enough to tip it to your favor.

Surely they want to keep paying students / parents happy and can let your professional one continue to be used as such. You ARE a professional and can be trusted as such.

Idk..... seems so different than the education system I am used to though.

Things happen, that's why they call it live TV. I have a family member who gives speeches and he tells me stories like your all the time. Personally, I was doing a function and spend a large amount of time on an important moment, and the program malfunctioned at that time. It happens. My suggestions,

1. Be aware of what are challenges. For example, incorporating a youtube into Zoom has a high rate of failure. So be a little careful of things that are hard or fancy.
2. Go over the things that could go wrong, take steps to deal with them. As others said, check power supply, have a back-up, try out the program, check with colleques.
3. Thank your students for their courtesy, it does not sound like they minded.
4. Recognize you can only do your best. I have a friend who has an important job and six children. She said the electricity went out at her wedding. What happened, she waited 10 minutes, it went back on, a good couple can deal with problems. In contrast, another lady had a beautiful $150,000 wedding, everything was beautiful and perfect, but she got bored and they got divorced a year later. Recognize what's important and what's not.
5. As to the funeral, have a co-host. Make sure you've distributed the login in multiple places.
6. Review things with the friend or family member, don't take on all the responsibility for yourself.

Hi Muji, this is really frustrating isn’t it? Chances are it is not your computer but the platform. When platforms get overloaded or have a problem they crash. What platform are you using for the service? If you are using zoom, you only have to go back to the meeting screen and press start again and it will unfreeze everyone. I always tell my class and zoom event participants that because we are using a software platform there is always a chance for technical issues, so if it happens, please stay on screen for at least 15 minutes to give me a chance to reset and if it can’t be reset then I will email instructions. I create a group email list so that I can quickly get info out. It’s happened a few times.

Computer crashing is just part of a bad week with work weekdays and my friend's funeral to do on Saturday. So I went for a morning walk today, too. I usually do them at night, but I figured a morning walk might help me through today's stress.

It's rainy, foggy, gray, and dreary here in the Appalachian mountains this week. Hoping for sunshine, looking forward to Thanksgiving.

I found out that my next door neighbor works at Walmart, and there's a sale on HP laptops for half price, so I hope I'll get to take that advice here to buy a new one. Meanwhile, fingers crossed as I'm using the old one as I write this until I can get to Walmart.

Wow, tomorrow at 4pm is the funeral via Zoom. Here goes.
