Technical Stress re Zoom Teaching Zoom Funeral
Well, it finally happened. My nightmare came true. Because of a collapse and hospitalization in February from chronic kidney disease I'm a COVID-19 high risk, so this Fall I've had to teach live streaming full time from home. My community college gave me no training nor did I get to bring my office computer home, so I'm using my personal laptop and learning live streaming on the fly.
In class after class I've dreaded a computer crash. Today it happened. With 27 minutes to go in the class hour, my screen froze. Then I heard that ugly loud buzz, and I had to turn my laptop off and on again.
When I got it back on, I returned to the live streaming meeting and my students, amazingly, were still there waiting for me 13 minutes later. I was heartened that they still had confidence in me. The thing it, though, that it crashed again. By the time I got logged back on a second time, there was only time enough left in the hour to dismiss class and say we'll try again next time.
The reason I'm posting about this is that I'm stressed out worrying it will happen again while I'm officiating for my friend's live streaming funeral coming up this weekend. I'm grateful for the support you all gave me on my thread about it last week here at DS PTSD. Now I'm concerned as to what to do if my laptop crashes like this in the middle of the live streaming funeral for my friend. Support welcome.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Prayers that it will go smoothly.
Also, I have been learning lately about technology and when they crash, how to react. But overall I am proud of you because you have a big heart, Muji and no matter what you are amazing.
There's no one with a computer that doesn't know computer stress sweetie... Everyone on the service understands this.... xo
Best wishes for the service.
Perhaps now that they've approved you teaching remote and your personal one is crashing..... it would be enough to tip it to your favor.
Surely they want to keep paying students / parents happy and can let your professional one continue to be used as such. You ARE a professional and can be trusted as such.
Idk..... seems so different than the education system I am used to though.
Wishing you the best.
1. Be aware of what are challenges. For example, incorporating a youtube into Zoom has a high rate of failure. So be a little careful of things that are hard or fancy.
2. Go over the things that could go wrong, take steps to deal with them. As others said, check power supply, have a back-up, try out the program, check with colleques.
3. Thank your students for their courtesy, it does not sound like they minded.
4. Recognize you can only do your best. I have a friend who has an important job and six children. She said the electricity went out at her wedding. What happened, she waited 10 minutes, it went back on, a good couple can deal with problems. In contrast, another lady had a beautiful $150,000 wedding, everything was beautiful and perfect, but she got bored and they got divorced a year later. Recognize what's important and what's not.
5. As to the funeral, have a co-host. Make sure you've distributed the login in multiple places.
6. Review things with the friend or family member, don't take on all the responsibility for yourself.
YOU ARE A VERY NICE PERSON FOR TAKING THIS ON. THAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE.
I hope things go good moving forward. I liked that the students were still waiting for you that’s nice.
I really hope the the livestream funeral goes well.
I also really liked what Rose wrote about you having a good heart, I agree & am proud of you too amigo
Gentlest of hugs <3
I hope everything goes smooth for you, Muji. Sending positive vibes your way.
It's rainy, foggy, gray, and dreary here in the Appalachian mountains this week. Hoping for sunshine, looking forward to Thanksgiving.
I found out that my next door neighbor works at Walmart, and there's a sale on HP laptops for half price, so I hope I'll get to take that advice here to buy a new one. Meanwhile, fingers crossed as I'm using the old one as I write this until I can get to Walmart.
We are here for you.
