It's that time of the semester in my death and dying classes I teach to nursing students at my community college. Every semester our textbook addresses PTSD and how there's an epidemic of suicides among our veterans of Afghanistan & Iraq. I had a veteran guest speaker come address my classes on behalf of "Project 22" & the motorcycle ride by veterans across America to raise awareness.

22 veterans commit suicide per day in America. That means every year more Americans die here in the USA by their own hand due to post-war PTSD than the enemy ever killed in the war in Iraq. So now I'm showing the film The Hurt Locker in classes so students can see what the war was like, what getting PTSD is about, and do more to help when they become nurses.
I'm a civilian survivor of a car bombing overseas, so when there are scenes like that in the film I do quite a bit of white knuckling myself in class. Sitting through the film 3 times at the end of the semester triggers the heck out of me. Still, I've decided to do it again for the 24th time because I think it shows what we can't tell people about PTSD, and they need to learn. And the countdown now is to make it only through 10 more days of classes.

I'm feeling down,, and got alot on my mind right now. I got grief going on, on top my depression and anxiety and now I got to worry about somewhere to live since I can't afford living here since my mom passed. So many bad things have happened since my mom passed. One thing after another it seems. Yesterday our fence fell from a storm that hit, had to call someone to prop it up. Thank...

It's important that the students do get a birds eye view of this very difficult and painful phenomenon ....however you reliving it over and over again just seems like misery...xo
Tomorrow I've decided I'm going to able to show that PTSD film in class and handle how much it triggers me, because of this support right here. You all really have my back, you really do. I am so grateful.
You can assign video clips and track who watches. Pretty cool.
Not because I don't think you can handle it, but it may be a good lesson to have them watch it on their own with some guided questions and then have them come in an discuss it... Also frees up a lot of time in class... if snow days have you behind schedule. : )
By the way, don't think my being triggered by it makes it less of a good movie. It did deserve those 6 Oscars it won.
