Shame over envy for those without PTSD
mujicaptsd
If you've been to a school reunion or seen the movie The Big Chill, you know one of the temptations in life is to compare your life with your classmates' lives. It's a bad idea, especially if your career has had setbacks due to interruptions like hospitalizations due to PTSD.
My old college roommate called me tonight. Wonderful guy, so it was hard to realize during my chat with him that I felt jealous. Envy because he makes more than twice what I do, and we have the same education.
I'm ashamed of myself for experiencing this envy, because usually I think like the long distance runner. Don't compete with other runners, run against your own last best time.
That means usually I'm grateful that I have had a job for 3 years now since my last health crash. I should be grateful today that I just got a contract in the mail today to teach again next year! It's a blessing! But my old roommate teaches at a big state university and I teach at a little community college. I love my job, and people at my job are good to me.
But the green envy monster got into me, and I thought I would confess it here. Anybody ever struggle with this sort of jealousy or envy? It's really a waste of time and energy, and a distraction from living in gratitude. Imagine how devastated I would be if my college hadn't renewed my contract. That happened this time of year at a different college in 2011. How soon we forget.
The Buddhists are right about how craving and desire for future things can make us forget to be here now.
Time to be grateful.

A lot of people see me as a CL and not a member but that's not true...I'm a member first and foremost and then a CL... You saw that and let me know that I was welcome.... That touched my heart..
You touch many hearts at DS everyday and that's a gift that you give that I know about....xo
I couldn't believe the way I saw people being treated and decided I had to take a stand against it... I did and stood up the best that I could... I ended up testifying on behalf of a patient actually but after it was all said and done I had to leave nursing... It came at a big cost to me psychologically... I was done
Am I sorry??.... I have times that I am however I don't know that I could have or would have wanted to do anything differently re standing up for the patients....
There are people as you've said the abuse the position of power that they're in and 'evil thrives when good men do nothing'
I think we always know in our hearts if something is really wrong and our conscious tells us we have to stand up even when there are consequences but it sure can be bloody hard to feel as though we are standing alone....
A few staff members came to me to support me in private well letting me know that they needed their jobs... I understood however I still think they were wrong... Being on the receiving end of a 'group cruelty' in order to boost the rather sad ego's of the staff was in no way 'right' in my mind.... I often believe it's important to pick our battles but it sounds to me that this was important for both of us Muji
Big hug for you and a blessing....x
Looks like Im not alone.
I would not be living right now if you all were not here.
That was really supportive of you. Yours was a really good post, too. You aren't the only one. You support us back, too.
Lilly,
What a horrible experience you had with that statistics class. I was transferred out of a class in seminary by the professor in a different but similar situation. In seminary, too, where people are supposed to be Godly and so on. It didn't ruin my seminary experience in general, but it opened my eyes that there are people like that in just about any setting.
SunCloud,
Thanks for much for sharing your story! Your stand cost you nursing like mine cost me pastoring. But we did go into our helping fields to actually help people, right? And those times come when we have to decide whether to take a stand today or not take a stand so we can help again tomorrow.
I know how looking back on the decision can be something we're ok with some days, and some days we're less sure of on other days. But I'm with you: it comes down to what else could we have done. I'm proud to stand with you now.
In the end, it occurs to me that you do a lot of nursing here on DS. And that means a lot.
