Yesterday, my counselor in this PTSD class I go to had us do a really hard task. She had us write out the most significant trauma that happened to us with as much detail as we could. 5 pages later, and I felt broken inside. And empty. She wants us to read it every day to desensitize us to the trauma. And oh man, I’m having a hard time. Have any of you had to do this before? Has it worked? Any tips to make it easier?

I didn't do it as a homework assignment, but I did it through my therapy journal. Yes, it has worked. Dealing with my mental health symptoms has been ALLOT easier since I can talk about the trauma behind the symptoms without dissociation, flashbacks, etc.
You just used my main trick for making it easier: sharing about it within my peer support network. It surely helps to know I am not alone with ^it^. There is powerful mojo in having company for the journey. My head is not a safe neighborhood to travel alone. There is safety in numbers.
Another set of tricks I used is the exercises I learned in therapy. If you are in a class, you probably have a few you learned there. Now would be an excellent time to practice them. Don't be discouraged if you don't feel immediate relief from them. It takes practice.
Gentle support while you work it through, Res. Welcome aboard.
