I have been in and out of hospitals for most of last year and have seen so many different doctors. Each time I was diagnosed with bipolar, borderline personality, and PTSD. Although I began going to a new doctor who put me on the spot. He asked me my life story. I told him of how I was sexually abused as a child and his response was, "you were too young to remember that, so how do you know?" I explained to him I remember everything vividly and have flashbacks. He argued with me! He kept insisting I can't have PTSD because I was too young to remember "IF" it even happened.
I felt like my abuse was being belittled and like I was not justified to be traumatized. It hurt so much to be doubted. It made all of my abuse seem like it was nothing or as though I was lying.
I'm terrified to open up about my life any more to him. I'm scared to tell him about the abuse I endured as a teenager or the rape that happened.... what if he denies it too? I don't think I can handle that. I worked so hard to talk about what happened and to come to terms with my trauma and all just to have my doctor doubt me.
I'm scared if I go to a different doctor that I will be put on different medication, though. I finally found meds that work. I feel so much better I don't want to ruin that.
I don't know why it affects me to have my doctor doubt me.. Why? Why does his opinion even matter? Maybe because he is a professional and someone I am supposed to confide in?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

He may have MEANT to ASK about what age you were, HOW these memories manifested (as in nightmares, physical triggers and sensations, etc.). But that he said you couldn't know suggests he's not grasped his medical specialty yet. I would let him practice on other patients until he does, and get myself a new one, even if it does mean changing meds.
It took me a while, but I eventually got a doc who was a PTSD specialist, and it made all the difference. There are others here with a bipolar and PTSD dual diagnosis. Turns out the trickier one right now in medicine is the PTSD one, not to make light of the bipolar one. The bipolar one right now is managed more or less well with medication, but the PTSD one takes listening not all docs are trained in.
I am so angry. What an asshole. He is so stupid! I feel like anyone who finished at least the 1st grade would know that you can remember things from your childhood. What an idiot.
I would find a new doctor and tell whoever is in charge of this asshole what he he said to you. You can't say that to victims. God I hate people. Can you tell a social worker or therapist or someone what he said to you?
I saw a couple of different pdocs before I found 'a good fit'
It's important for you to have some faith in your medical team... Big hug for you...x
And, just out of curiosity, how old (roughly) is this dude?
Because that was an old belief, that kids didn't remember.
But they do. Or they repress it and remember later.
The neural development that enables the construction of long-term memories shows up way earlier in some kids than in others...and what, is he an interrogator or something?
Does he have to have documentation to believe you were abused?
Having an authority figure invalidate you like that can be really mind warpy.
You shouldn't have to deal with such a person. And I don't blame you for not telling him the other things that happened to you - he doesn't deserve to hear the truth because he doesn't know the truth when he hears it. Please take the advice given and find another doctor - someone who treats you with the respect and consideration you deserve.
I am so angry about this! That is so horrible!
It sounds like you're really triggered by this, I don't think you can heal talking to someone who questions your truth all the time.
I really don't like any type of doctors rather it is physical or psychologists. I felt that my life had been really ruin because of them and it caused me to have a lot of anger inside. Also I just don't know.....It's peeing me off and each day I hear my mom mad because she is lonely. My oldest brother who lives in Ohio is a a**hole. He was the one who brought up the conversation about her past and it's got her very mad to the point that I have to see her anger, plus tomorrow she has an doctor's appointment with her primary doctor and mom is really worked up about it. I keep hearing the work 'Move' a lot, it's making me want to leave...... I don't have bipolar but I do know about hurting when somelse don't believe you are honestly hurting/
