I ran an intervention in the roost last night. For those who need background: My eldest son gave his father chicks for his last birthday. 6 red hens. The birthday fell in December, during the most frightening phase of hubby's medical crisis, so the humor and distraction was downright medicinal. I even enjoyed the fact that hubs got the chicks, wifey got the work. Well. . . I enjoyed the say more than the do, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Ah-h-h-h. . . How quickly desperate measures become family habit. . .
3 of the original red hens died, one from unknown cause, two from dog attack. A few weeks ago I made an impulse buy of 4 more hens. I am kinda curious about the different chicken breeds, so I bought 4 randomly caught breeds. I didn't even ask breed names. It has been kind of fun surfing the net to see if I can identify the breeds on my own. The 3 original red hens are being serious chicken shits. They have been terrorizing the four new hens like high school cheerleaders on a nerd girl. It is hard for me to believe I am gonna get a 7 egg rent payment if the new hens are not allowed in the nesting box. Not knowing. . . Just logicating. . . I am sometimes dangerous when I logicate. . .
Last night's intervention consisted of running the old hens off the roost when they went to settle in a bit before sunset. They have not been allowing the new hens to roost there. Listen up, ladies. There are powers greater than Top Chicken. The Arf is getting bored with all this hen pecking. She wants her butt fresh eggs!!!
I allowed the old hens back on the roost after 3 of the new hens had found a place on the roost - the 4th hen is the current bottom of the pecking order. She isn't sure she can trust the other three she came with any more than she can trust the old three. I had to carry her in later. Even after I allowed the old hens back in, I stayed with them until well after sunset. They were seriously disturbed by the usupers on their roost. But, they made it. I heard squawking a good bit before sunrise and orchestrated a civil start to the day. The old hens are still being bossy, but. . . Maybe not quite so much? ? ?
Is it possible for chickens to act like a flock of cats? They have begun rubbing up against my ankles while I walk. I am not all the way sure whether or not I like it.

I did the dumbest thing today. I charged my earbuds, unplugged the block and put the block in my little bag instead of the earbuds. I wasn't happy about that when I got to the gym. What a dummy!

Ever since I stopped doing therapy because of insurance, I've been feeling that old tense and irritable sense of anxiety and stress. I hate that. I was making so many strides and changes during therapy, my therapist would acknowledge all of my progress and accomplishments, and I miss that reassurance. Today I thought about it, and I made those changes! She would always tell me that I chose to...

Yea, the chickens will work it out, eventually, but The Arf wants her butt fresh eggs. 3 a day is not enough eggs for everybody in the homestead and store eggs have started tasting "funny" to us. Can't help it. When The Arf wants, she gets greedy.
I'm not quite sure how old any of the hens are. This is a brand new exposure for me. It wasn't even my idea to start with, though I have thoroughly enjoyed them. 3 months of internet surfing while I watch them pecking around the yard is 9/10 (at least) of my current knowledge. All are full-sized. I think. The 3 reds grew most of their combs and wattles this spring. Three of the new four are just now sprouting combs and wattles.
Let's see. . . Which reliable internet source started me using combs and wattles as a measure? ? ?
Small steps.
the yard well not do , if you want more eggs then it must be dont this way ,
i have been raising chickens like forever mine are all laying everyday,
also if your keeping them in dark barn chicken need at least 14 hours of day lite , if they do not get that lite they well not lay , i keep a lite in my hen house all winter they lay most of winter .
if there not old enough to lay i think they start around six months ,
