We got 6 red hens in December. This would be the first time any of us have kept chickens. Eldest son bought them at a feed store. Only 3 of them are still alive. Didn't start getting eggs until recent weeks. First one a day for a while. Then two a day. Last week we started getting 3 a day. I may have to compost the store bought eggs soon. I am getting kinda hooked on the butt fresh eggs.
'Bout time these chicks started paying rent. . .

Now I'm hungry! Omelets!

Getting them settled in was a bit of a challenge. I could live without the chicken shit on the back porch, and they can tear up a garden bed quicker than that emotionally disturbed dog, but they are free ranging nicely in our suburban back yard and now that I am finally getting some rent out of them. . .
Last year we included a pair of sexed naked necks to our flock. Nope, one's a roo. My son feels bad (because we mean to give 'Susan' away) so two more sexed naked necks. Now we have two strapping roo on Craigslist.
