I wrote in a private message here about it so I thought I'd tell everybody that its come time for one last one way trip to retirement in Mexico for me so if you don't hear from me tomorrow, dont worry. Here's what I wrote in that message:
As for me today, my life is reduced to utter simplicity at the moment as my last day renting in the US is tomorrow and my bags are packed for the airport in the morning. Anything not in them is left behind for the landlord to take. Today I'm still trying to get the required state inspection for sale of my car done at my car dealer's garage. I'm writing from their waiting room right now. They're wasting time; I don't think they get what a hard deadline like mine really is. Oh, well. If they don't get things done the guy buying my car will work with me anyway, he said.
The next time you hear from me on Thursday I'll be the retired resident of a new country!
The bus driver had seen me in his rear view mirror and had backed up just for me. Isn't that incredible? :-)
My last year in the States teaching Spanish I got my tires slashed, acid poured on my car's hood, and a bullet shot through my driver's side mirror of my car. So being treated so kindly by a new stranger in my new home country was heavenly to me.
In the States my church friends were super kind to me, though, so it was great that I got to say hi to them today via Zoom when they logged on for a meeting.

But I made 3 bad decisions in life, too. Deciding to get married twice when I really prefer being single taught me a hard lesson Then when I chose to teach community college counseling courses I chose the wrong school to do that. So when it came to making this decision, I really took a hard look at it first for 4 years, visiting, researching, checking myself. It's really exciting, then, that the early going following my retirement decision is showing my decision to have been a good one this time.
Taking 4 years to decide on this place, Secouya, yeah, I got to wondering if it would ever happen, especially when the pandemic put all travel in the world in doubt. It's so great to be here vaccinated and have 2 COVID-19 tests confirm my safe travel
Loo, it IS reassuring, isn't it? Yes, Mexicans are more respectful to older people indeed. Like you I don't want to go into the USA's aged care system. In my case that's despite the fact that nursing home care is my family's business. My family owns a chain of nursing homes throughout Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. If I went to any of them, I would get preferential treatment.
The thing is, I don't want to be in a nursing home at all. I would rather have nursing care in my home, and even with a 40 year career of health care benefits in the USA, like most of the USA's middle class I can't afford that in the States. I can afford it here, though. Health care is good here and way more affordable. I just refilled my diabetes medication here, and its cost came to 1/10 of the cost for the same medication in the US. The same with the cost of seeing a doctor here for my COVID-19 test for travel to the USA, and with seeing a doctor when I got sick here last year.
Food and transportation is turning out to be as cheap as I'd hoped for it to be, too. I have a motor bike and I eat out and take taxi cabs at will, something I could never afford in the USA even as a middle class full time community college instructor.
I'm looking in my early days here for any hidden costs to arise now that I'm committed to staying. So far it looks as if I can pull this off all on my lonesome and without having to be rich. That's really reassuring regarding my PTSD anxiety from the upheaval of moving.
