It was 2 years for me before I could talk about my rapes. It was 12 years before I could talk to a therapist about surviving a car bombing, though my whole family was in it and remembers it well. I just wasn't ready.
Anti-depressants helped me in the meantime, so I'm grateful for them. When I did open up to my therapist about all of it, the rapes, the bombs, and the domestic violence from my parents, then I was able to go off of them.
But it seems from my experience that a good therapist combines meds, talking, and patience to go at your own pace to help you heal. It did for me.
