11 days until the Winter Solstice. On December 21st, the Earth turns on its axis and begins turning its Southern Axis away from the sun. In order for the Earth to turn on its axis, it requires a moment of time where it stands still in order to reverse direction. Imagining the geo-physics of that boggle my mind. Is there an element on the planet which does not feel the affect of that mighty shift?
Personally, I feel affected by the Summer Solstice, as well, but it doesn't feel as intense to me. I theorate that is because it is easier to stay active, yet isolated in the warmth. With the longer nights and cooler temperatures of winter, I am inside more and feeling its affects on the people and animals closest to me in addition to my own.
Anybody got any neat Solstice trivia to share? Any grumbles to grumb?

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.

"Solstice" means literally "Sun stop." It's when the Sun reaches either its greatest northerly or southerly point in its annual motion. From these two points it *appears* to reverse and go the other way.
The summer and winter solstices mark the maximum and minimum noontime heights of the Sun in the sky (regardless of which hemisphere you're in, btw. Thus, our winter solstice in Northern Hemisphere is the summer solstice in Southern Hemisphere).
The changing height of the noontime Sun through the year is a result of Earth's 23.5-degree tilt on its spin axis. As Earth moves around its orbit, first one and then the other hemisphere tilt toward the sun, and so the hemisphere tipped toward the sun experiences summer. The hemisphere tipped away from the Sun gets winter.
The Sun reaches its minimum noontime height on the winter solstice. This is the shortest day of the year with the least amount of sunlit hours.
So imagine this: A fast-spinning ball, not even spinning on a perpindicular at that, but at a tilt, in a not-circle, so that over eons of geologic time.... billions of years to quote Carl Sagan, may he rest in star-peace....the planet doesn't go flopping willy-nilly, so that one pole is *always* closer and condemsn one hemisphere to always-summer or always-winter... Nope. We get the mind-boggling physics and geometry that allow four seasons. Try that one on Mercury...
The word I love is analemma. The word for the figure-eight the sun seems to make in the sky over your head through the year. All this b/c we have imperfections in tilt and orbit.
the solstice is a big deal to me, arfie. thanks for the heads up. i get so absent minded. i don't necessarily follow traditional holidays. however i consider days like the solstice a good time to reflect and say my thank yous for the blessings i have.
i know a few traditions of bringing in the green to protect the spirits of the forest life. as it is known as the shortest day lost of fun can be had with traditions of filling ones house with light.

I'm not going down over winter break this year, but after New Year's I am getting away for a few days to Mexico. Can't wait!
