Dear Mom;
Fifty six years ago this Mothers day (and it was Mothers Day, that day too), you gave birth to a daughter who loved you, more than you even loved yourself. I expected love and instead you looked at me as the curse who ruined your life. God blessed me with grandparents to raise me in those first few years. Their love sheltered me from your feelings; or lack of them; about me. The time would come when I would be useful to you, as a ticket out of the house so you could cheat on your boyfriend/supposed husband, with two lesbian g/f's you had. The both of you, used me as a punching bag to work out your anger at one another. There were beatings with whiskey bottles, belt buckles and even being stripped naked and left outside for the other kids to laugh at. All that seemed minor compared to the emotional abuse. The name you had for me; satan; tore my soul apart as well as your insistence that I was the blame for all the bad things that happened to you in your life. To be fair though, you did also talk to God and blame God for the troubles in your life as well, and there is a feeling of honor to be in such great company. Still though, I did not judge you or hate you. After-all, I had an older brother you loved dearly; which you made me well aware of; and so I could only think that I had fallen short somehow and I just needed to try harder and protect you more and someday you may love me just as much. Day by day, I learned how to turn off the pain and become emotionless, around you. Grandma made plans for her and I to leave and never look back. I'll never forget the beating she took after you told my grandfather, it must have been a proud day for you. Because you could not deal with your sexuality, you did an about face and slept around with other men. Somewhere between all those times you must have sobered up now and then and how haunting that must have been for you. Meanwhile, I was being molested by a cousin and beaten regularly with your blessings, by your dear son. Abortion now seemed acceptable to you and so the result of you playing around; the baby who would have been my sister; became medical waste. In the next few years you became pregnant once again and this time, another son, which you kept. Grandma passed away; another thing that you let me know was my fault; and it became my job to raise my new brother. You finally married that boyfriend and left him only 2 years later, knowing you had a free meal ticket for your new son, at least. You looked so beautiful when you dressed up to go to the bars and I remember telling you so. Strangers began to live with us and you did not listen when I told you the things that were happening when you left me alone with them and instead called me ungrateful, often using my older brother to administer the beatings to me as you cheered him on. Your absence at my wedding, did not go unnoticed as the guests; many of who who came only after finding out you would not be there, since as you put it, you had laundry to do; as they commented at the reception how there was no one to steal my moment and no arguments as well. I know you were angry when I restricted your access to my kids when I saw you trying to do to them what I had went through, but you'll be happy to know that I never did tell them what you did to me leaving them free to cry and grieve for you and later hate me for not being there at your funeral. I could go on and on, but I think you see now, just how much you meant to me. I remember you, everyday of my life and no one understands why I do not cry because you and your oldest son have both passed away, nor do I ever miss you. I do regret that this makes others uncomfortable because I know they did not know you as I did, so I do have a heart. I do not; however; love in front of others and hate on the inside. In fact, I do not hate at all and for that I suppose I owe you thanks. May this day mean for you throughout eternity, what it means to me.

I don't really know how to label this but I having a rough week and I can't say it's one thing.... I have a lot on my plate which is nothing new and I try to cope in many positive ways and do but I still have my moments. My kids more so my daughters talk to me about everything which I know it's cause of comfort and we are close.... however I really struggle with the venting about their dad which...

One day when my son was young and with his dad, I went to the ice cream shop. A mother was up there with her two children, a girl and her younger brother. The mom got ice cream for her and the boy and left the girl at the counter. The girl went to her mother and asked for some more money. The mother scolded her but gave her the money. The girl came back to the table with her ice cream. She said to her mom, "You hate me, don't you?" The mom said, "Yes I do." I could have gone over and slapped that woman silly. I wish I had.
How dare that woman say she hated her daughter over a few cents.
In my books, you treat your kids right and you love them to bits or you are a horrible person and deserve to go to hell.
Listen Molly, there are a lot of us mothers out there who would have been glad to be your mother. And, there are a lot us mothers out there who would have been glad to slap the shit out of your mother.
No child deserves what you went through. There are plenty of people out there who will treat you as you deserve. I only wish there were people out there who could make it up to you what you suffered.
If i could say something to her it would be.
Sorry they made you have me.I know how awful it is to be pregnant when you don't want to. I don't love you and you don't love me and i know you might have doe some very bad things but i do not hold you responsible for anything as you were seriously mentally ill.
I do hold everyone else responsible bye.
@ Virlaceygo....You are right and no matter what has happened to our ownselves, when we have children it all changes. There was no one there threatening her at that point and she had the power to say it ends here, just as I did. God can and is making up for it.
@StKevin... The pain is the same for all of us, my hurt is no more important than yours and I think what hurts the most is for those of us that know that pain.....Each and every new incident that comes forward is like another layer of pain that we carry with us.
@ Tootienne....yes in your situation your mom does need compassion. In my situation, drugs and alcohol were a choice she made. No one chooses mental illness.
@ Feather... I have 2 friends that were not able to have children and I know that pain is like none other. It's really sad that so much pain and suffering could have been overcome and forgotten with two simple and heartfelt words, "I'm Sorry". The closest I ever got was Your imagining all this but I'm f'n sorry, does that make you feel better?
@ Oskathagr...I totally get what your saying and I wrestled with that for so long. My grandmother wanted us both away from that for both of our safety and that was yet another chance for my mother to put me first before her path and say that it ends here, with me. She was a very strong willed person and by that time, out from under immediate danger and menacing all in the family at that point. If she was abused, I get that she was angry and hurting, but that does not write anyone a free pass to abuse the innocent. I suppose that is what makes all this such a huge disaster. There is nothing I would not do for my children including confess my sins to them and especially when I see their lives hung in the balance over bad choices I may have made. What a mess it makes, huh?
Bless you all and I hope I did not throw some triggers at you with this post.
There's a lot of help now for alcoholics and addicts.
Anyway, I just felt I needed to read your story again, and say my heart goes out to you.
If your mother was abused she chose to abuse.NO excuse.
I am very proud of you.
P.S. I am among those who would have slapped the shit out of your mother if around/having witnessed such a thing.
- StKevin: My mother was very similar.
- tootienni: I completely agree!
- Jazzie: I love that book!! Found it to be very healing (oddly). There's a movie as well. Good movie but only if watched after reading the book. More of a visual companion than an actual movie, I suppose. If one watched the movie first, it wouldn't make much sense.
The Bible has been around for a long, long time. It does not say you can be mean to your children if your parents were mean to you. Actually, the Bible says you must treat your children right.
There is a certain amount of stuff you can blame on your parents, but not as much as you are saying IClaimThe's mother can.
You seem to be focusing on the wrong issue. I said I would have liked to slap the shit out of IClaimThe's mother. What exactly do you think would have got through to her? It is not against the law to be nasty to your kids. Making excuses for bad behaviour doesn't help. It only condones.
If someone told me my father was probably sexually molested and therefore, it is understandable he molested me, I would tell that person he was nuts.
As adults, we are responsible for what we say and do, no one else.
Oprah interviewed some pedophiles. They did not say, "I abused because I was abused." They abused because they could and because they chose that way to get their jollies off.
People misbehave because there is some payoff for them to do so, and when they are able to escape the consequences, they do it all the more.
