It's by birthday! TW
It's July 1st, and I leave for Uruguay the 22nd. Exactly 3 weeks left. By the way, today is my 57th birthday. I won't have anybody to celebrate with today, but I'm glad I can speak of the real meaning of my birthday here.
TW
I thought I would die in that rebel car bombing when I was 9. At 15, a government patrol tried to execute me kneeling in the street but the officer's pistol jammed not once, but twice. But I'm still here 48 years later. Ain't that a miracle?
When I go to Uruguay, I'm treated as a vet myself even though I wasn't in uniform, and that trip's coming soon. For me going back to Montevideo is going back to my battlefield for exposure therapy and healing. There will be a lot of sacred moments at different street corners, beginning with the corner where I survived that car bombing. It's not far from my hotel.
It's oddly healing to be in Uruguay among lots of people my age who remember those days and have had to go on to heal from PTSD. I try to remember that when I'm talking here in the States to a US veteran of Vietnam or of Afghanistan/Iraq.
Miracles do happen. I'm living proof at 57 years of age now. 57 orbits around the sun. Woo hoo!

Here is my new brother, copper :) He's so tiny! Moo and Tuck were ok with him on first meeting. Rocket due to his severe aggression will never meet Cooper.

Best Happy Birthday Song
May you have a wonderful day and continue to be blessed and have more miracles in your life. You deserve it Muji. Many birthday hugs.
May every year you live from here out bring you a hundred years of joy. (To misquote Hallmark.)

My USA undergrad college roommate, class of 1979, went down to Montevideo with me last September 2014. We got to go to this beach, and I got to tell him how much fun it was to be a kid in Malvin, even with the civil war fighting and the rebel headquarters being in Malvin.
I got to tell him that if I go first, my request is to have my ashes sprinkled here, on Malvin's beach. What a lovely resting place it would be, surviving war there as a kid, and coming full circle to rest in peace there at life's end.

As my brithday comes to a close, I've got to say it was a good one, y'all. You, my family of choice, were just great. Took myself out for Mexican after work to boot. Then came home to find a happy birthday email from an old friend (we met in 1983) and got a happy birthday phone call from an old friend (we met in 1977). It's nice to be remembered after all these years. Thanks for being such a big part of that remembrance. DS PTSD is the best!
Gosh, I do love those birthday songs. Playing them just one more time before the stroke of midnight and the birthday's over. :-)
Happy Birthday to you! And safe travels.
I am constantly amazed by your courage and how you challenge yourself. You are a inspiration to me and your advise is always welcome and appreciated.
This trip is going to be amazing for you. It is an opportunity to stand on those very spots where the trauma happened and write new safe memories. It is an opportunity to face the trauma now that you are mature, stable and confident in who you are. It is an opportunity that will change your life. Go with a plan to address what you need to in order to help further your journey to wellness. Be sure to include some fun plans in your travels to help offset the negatives. Be sure to be grateful everyday that you have made it and you are doing well.
I wish I had your courage and determination.
(((hugs)))
