I’m scared and maybe skeptical or in denial
Yesterday’s appointment with my counselor wasbterrifying. I’m scared for our next visit. She screened me for DID. She asked when the first time I noticed my sense of reality didn’t match up with others....it wasn’t until last year really. I always said blah blah blah to husband. He’s the only one who ever doubted me or told me I was wrong but then I started wondering if he was right. I needed to figure it out and now there’s a real doctor telling me maybe he was right. That’s been a fear all along because with my history - maybe that’s the case but...... I have never been questioned like that before. I’m so confused. And scared. She did say it sounds like he was playing some mind games and I know most of my answered were not high on the % of dissociative issues but I don’t know how to score the test. I circled a lot of 0s 3s and a few 7s. I’m just nervous. And besides that the bigger problem that I keep forgetting to bring up is that I don’t trust anyone.
I find myself thinking everyone is evil, everyone has a dark side, that there’s no avoiding the pains of life but also that life is so surreal, almost like I am watching it happen. I know that’s related to dissociation somehow but I don’t understand any of it. I literally feel sick.
Trying to stay present today is hard. I’m writing down things I catch myself wondering if I did or how I did. I haven’t even been awake for four hours yet! My old counselor used to tell me to walk myself through what I was doing so I tend to not know if I’ve used shampoo or conditioner in the shower so I tell myself as I lather “shampooing, Friday, December 21...” or “driving, Friday, behind a black Jeep, rainbow in the rear view, how beautiful.” I’ve done okay but I trail off....washing my hands in the bathroom I caught myself returning. I have always thought these things were signs of fatigue...My mom announces that she does these things - drives thirty minutes and doesn’t know how she got home, knows she picked up jet keys but no idea where she left them....” Memory problems like that seem like just a part of life to me because Mom shares all. Other people really don’t struggle like this?

During the most intense of my letting-go-of-denial episodes, I came to think of the denial as a psychic bandage which had been placed over wounds I was not ready, willing and/or able to deal with at the time. Ripping those bandages off hurt, big time, especially the ones which were covering my most infected wounds.
Steadying support while you sort your own, Marah. Hope healing happens here.
Sorry if the book review here took too long, but that book really helped me with my own surreal struggle. I got PTSD in the Tupamaro War of Uruguay as a missionary kid in the 1960s, and then twenty years later in the 1980s my PTSD came on strong. The crisis caused my first divorce and sent me to my first counselor in 1985 and I've been in therapy and support groups coping with it ever since.
It was completely terrifying when I went to that counselor in 1985. I got help for depression, and managed through a decade. Then in 1995 my PTSD came on strong again, and I got formally diagnosed with it and not just with depression. That really helped, but I had another PTSD crisis again in 2000 in my second divorce actually landed me in the hospital for 4 days.
In 2010 I had my PTSD come on strong yet again, but this time I was ready for it. My fiancee did break up with me, though, calling me "lazy." I was heartbroken but since I'd had my partner leave both times before when my PTSD had come on strong, sadly enough I was prepared for that, too.
I'd say don't doubt yourself as to whether your husband is right or wrong, just get yourself through this. It's terrifying, but in my experience it passes, though others don't understand. It comes back, too, and it's terrifying again, but it passes again, I've learned.
I wish it didn't do that, come and go in our lives, but apparently that's what living after trauma is like. Surreal is the word for it. However, it's real, not based on a dream or on delusions of ours, we lived through real things that happened to us and that's why we are like we are. There is a basic reason for all of this. So we're here for you because we get that, Marah, you're not alone.
