I have night terrors I guess you could say. I'm 20. They went away for a few years, and then came back after a pretty significant trigger earlier this year... Well, that was in February. My husband (the first person I ever *really* talked to about my abuse) left for basic military training in June. We haven't lived together since, but I'm still getting the night terrors/flashbacks and we're going to be living together again in less than a month. I was hoping to have my problems under control by then. He and I talked about going to get professional help if I was still freaking out all the time... Now I'm not sure I want to see a psychologist or psychiatrist.
My mom was a drug addict, suicidal and really just a shitty mom growing up... She was in and out of hospitals for attempted suicide. And the drugs they put her on didn't help. I guess mostly I'm just paranoid that I'm going to turn out like her.

I have a possible new diagnosis to discuss with my therapist tomorrow. It might be the answer to a question that I have had since I was 19. It's called Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). It happens to a large percentage of people with ADHD, which I have. Actually, I have been watching videos about ADD/ADHD lately. I remember my Mom telling me that she watched a show on ADD and she...

Hello- I am new to the group
Hugs and hopes. I know it is hard.
I can imagine just looking at it and remembering its purpose from time to time would imprint on your subconscious. Doubt it could hurt anyways.
I know for myself it is the only thing standing between me and ending up like my abuser who happens to also be my mother as well.
Im about your age and Ive had lots of trouble sleeping when I was younger. Keeping a dream journal as was suggested is a good idea. It will make it easier to analyze what you are experiencing.
Am saying this because I was raised by a mentally ill mom. She refused all therapy her entire life, and progressively became worse. My biggest fear used to be I would not just take after her, but end up like her. Now have realized it just won't happen. I have my own vulnerabilities but an entirely different spirit.
Mental health care did not create your mom's illness. Seeing a non-medical therapist can help you gain insight. You will still be in control of your recovery.
I wish you the best.
