From Wikipedia: Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the fear of public speaking.[1] The word glossophobia derives from the Greek γλῶσσα glōssa, meaning tongue, and φόβος phobos, fear or dread. Some people have this specific phobia, while others may also have broader social phobia or social anxiety disorder.
Stage fright may be a symptom of glossophobia.[1]
Ever since I started coming here in 2012, by coincidence a local friend recommended me as a guest speaker on PTSD and churches have been asking me to share, while respecting the anonymity of my peers here, about what we learn here in PTSD recovery. I've been really luck to have had a 6 year streak without a really negative experience.
Until today. When I pulled into the church parking lot today, for the first time in 6 years the church didn't have me advertized on their sign, which was odd. When I walked in, nobody greeted me as they usually do. When I picked up the church bulletin, I saw they had changed my talk's title without telling me. As I spoke, you could have heard crickets chirping. When I gave the same talk at another church two weeks ago, folks laughed at my jokes. Today not a chuckle. At the end two weeks ago I got applause. Nothing exceptional, just the polite applause folks give. Today I got yawns.
Afterward during coffee hour nobody came up to shake my hand or sit near me. Finally, I just took my dirty coffee cup to the kitchen and left. Nobody seemed to notice.
I get why people have glossophobia now. It was a really unnerving experience.
I teach at a community college, and I'm having a little stage fright tonight just thinking of getting up in front of my class in the morning. This glossophobia is real anxiety stuff.

Hey all, i know its been quite awhile since i posted on here. Its been a summer all right. Its been something else........... You know how they say not to open the can of worms? Well a few months ago i decided to find out what my due date would have been for my first baby, the one conceived by r***. My baby would have been due on March 4th of 2006. They would be 20 years old. I was R**** on June...

Sounds like something is off at the church. I can't tell you what.
When I first took my son over the the fire station to apply to be a junior...he got a flat reception. I pushed a bit and he started his interview (I sat beside him). They brought up the fact that a previous member had just been arrested for arson.
I had no clue. I stared. They stared back.
I explained that I don't follow the news much (I don't) and my son had just spent the summer in California with his father.
Honestly I almost never think of that unless of thinking about how he joined, but it clearly shook the station up for a time.
I just told my son to be grateful that it didn't involve him.
Hugs, Patti
No insights to offer, but continued support while you work it through. Hope the stage fright about tomorrow's class performance stays little and manageable.
On Friday I went grocery shopping after work and my kidney disease neuropathy, which has caused numbness in my hands and feet, caused me to drop a glass jar of pasta sauce in the cash register line.
Boom! Red sauce all over the floor in front of everybody. Then everybody behind me really frustrated because they closed the line for a janitor to do the cleanup.
It hasn't been my favorite weekend.
(I think that it's Ragu that's started selling it in plastic jars. So much lighter and more shatter proof.)
I hope tomorrow goes better. Bring something with you in your pocket that you can hold or just know it’s there as a grounding tool that can help you if you’re feeling anxious.
Support & hugs <3
if it is any consolation,i could listen to you speak, and so eloquently and so full of empathy, for hours.
(((((((gentle hugs)))))
I agree that it had nothing to do with you..... Something was off there
I hope today is a better day.....
I heard a well known musician talking on a talent show discussing a contestant recently about how thick skinned you have to be when working in public because people can be unkind ..... Another hug.....xo
