Expectations... please don't do me in!
jltristan
Today is going to be a challenge for me....
Saturdays are the day that my husband usually goes fishing and I usually relax at home. We have structured it this way because I have a hard time with expectations. In the past, I was the one who made the decisions and structured our days but over the past two years it has become unbearable to me to do such things. Expectations cause me to panic! I NEVER know how I am going to feel from moment to moment, let alone day to day and I cannot handle the pressure of it all. So, I choose not to put myself in the situation. I choose low-stress....simplicity.
Today (like many times in the past) my husband has decided to spend the day with me but with no true plans. He, of course, has asked me repeatedly what I want to do, and I have in turn, nervously told him "I don't know" and that he should decide. Ultimately, I still ended up choosing because that is what he is used to (after 22 years of marriage). Of course, the entire process and the anticipation of a day out has me feeling foggy and anxious. The expectations of others and the potential LET DOWN always does me in!
Hoping to push through these feelings......

Hopes of pushing through the feelings never have worked for me. What has worked for me is letting myself do something about it in small bytes and long chews. Kinda like you did with making your husband ask several times instead of greeting his expectations with your agenda planner already filled out and open to the "correct" hour.
And then, of course, there is keeping my own expectations real. I don't get to change 22 years of habit with a single wave of my wishy wand... It takes time and persistence.
Just mine...
Gentle support while you sort your own, jl.
Thanks everyone. :)
