Dealing with daughter’s sexuality
Hi there, new to Daily Strength... Long story short is that I have PTSD that I’ve just recently started to deal with again. I’ve picked up the torch another time to forge on in hopes of finally being symptom free. Well, for several reasons it’s been stressful, especially this weekend. Then I am talking to my 16 year old daughter today and she tells me she is pretty sure she is bisexual.
I’m a wreck. My emotions have been on the verge of breaking down for about 3 days, then this. I reacted awesomely. I did all the right things. We didn’t talk for a long time cause she wanted to change the subject, but she was in a great mood the rest of the day and she told me she loved me about 5X today, lol. She has always known her father and I are allies to the LGBTQ community, so idk if this is just not that big of a thing to her. It is to me. There’s a lot to consider and I just don’t have that extra emotional capacity to fully embrace this right now. I mean, of course I do and I will. But I just wish I was in a better head space so I could wrap my head around it better so my brain isn’t swimming so much right now. Luckily, I’m Level: Expert at hiding this shit so she doesn’t have a clue, but I’m just torn up inside.

a) she is bisexual - in which case you should ask yourself, what's it matter? If you truly support the community, what is it about this that has you torn up? Is it just that she's growing older/being more independent? Is it concern for her sexual safety or emotional safety? What can you do to help yourself cope with those things? Can you teach her more about how to be safe? Can you make sure she has support she needs?
b) she is going through a phase - that is completely normal for a lot of girls. I can name several friends of mine who look back and ask themselves what they were thinking? They were just curious. Same questions apply here, what is your concern? Does the possibility of a phase comfort you at all? If so, never mention it ;)
I'm not sure how to help except to try to make you think a little more about it and just to be here as you need to vent or work through things. Glad you're on DS. Hopefully you find it helpful.
Isn't 16 an age of questioning? It seems to this just-a-patient that adolescents try on lifestyle declarations like fashion styles in the search for their adult identities, Today's big hair is tomorrow's faux pas. Some of us outgrow the lifestyle waffling. Seems. . . Mostly just guessing while I reach to respect individual sorting processes.
But. . . Getting back to the individual who actually joined this forum and leaving the 3rd parties to sort their own.
Welcome aboard. Gentle support while you tackle the ". . .PTSD that I’ve just recently started to deal with again."
i trust being here will help the .. carpet under your feet stabilise more quickly than otherwise : ) we'll hold the corners down; i'm stepping on one right now.
and gently breathing with you xo
you already had this, but we are here with you. you got this and now you have us too xo
From the time they were little I told them that they may one day find a boy or girl that they would love and that I'd love them the same even if they turned out to love someone of the opposite sex. That being heterosexual wasn't a sin and was as normal as being gay.
I put it like that...specifically like that...because there's so much against someone that feels that they have to "come out" as homosexual, bi, or whatever.
Quite frankly...I, their parent am not known by my sexual identity to my kids (in fact...I since I have two kids, they prefer to think that I've had sex twice and leave it at that).
And well, I prefer to stay out of my kid's sexual identity too.
They're the same people no matter what. And as long as they're good people, caring, kind, good to each other, etc....then I'm good with the world.
That said, I understand that we all have dreams for our kids. That help us through those tough nights of no sleep and all the other parenting challenges. Just like our kids have to get over the idea that life isn't a Disney movie, we have to get over the idea that our kids aren't perfect characters in some TV show too. We can wish for it all for them. The perfect high school experience, perfect college, A- grades (don't want them to be too perfect), the best job in a location not too far from us. The perfect husband...good looking, with good grades, same religion/politics/environmental beliefs as us and our child, etc, etc, etc.
But truth is...they'll probably end up mostly like us. Average, flawed humans...just trying to find our own way.
Your daughter turned to you...at age 16. That's no small thing. It's clear that you're close and she values your opinion. I suspect that you'll do better at this than you realize. Give yourself some time. Maybe reach out to some parents groups.
You've got this,
Heartfelt hugs,
Patti
