So a couple weeks ago I started to really try to get myself together. I started exercising and eating right and got caught up on my work and even started doing some projects around the house I'd been wanting to do.
After a couple weeks, I started to really feel hopeful that I could get my stuff together. And then my husband brought home a puppy.
I know it doesn't sound like a bad thing, but he is rarely at home, and this puppy had never been in a house and was not housebroken AT ALL and hadn't even been to the vet yet at 3 months old.
So I spent the last week doing vet visits, cleaning up TONS of messes, mopping up after muddy paws, lying awake in bed because the puppy whines all night etc etc.
Did I mention that I also have an18 month old baby boy?
It took me a year and a half to even start to take 45 minutes a day for myself to exercise, now that is out the window. I'm behind on all the housework again, and my husband (who doesn't give a flying f-bomb that I have PTSD) is no help and just complains that I'm being irritable (intolerable is what he said).
It's nothing but whining puppy and pee puddles and crying baby and poopy diapers and muddy floors and laundry and dishes and being told I'm not in a good enough mood and where is dinner and where's the clean clothes and I FEEL LIKE A HUMAN TRASH CAN!
And anytime I even start to mention this, everyone negates it as "oh, at least you don't work" (DON'T WORK?!?!?!?!) HOLY CRAP!

I don't really know how to label this but I having a rough week and I can't say it's one thing.... Unless training is done by the tenth week, it takes a lot longer to train a puppy. Because their bad habits and need whines are set. So breaking them is even harder. Plus your child is now toddling, EWWWWW, so puppy messes can't be left to when hubby gets home to take care of his dog.
This only creates more work for you easily eating up your hard earned 45 min self time(which is while your child's naps, I'm sure)
I hate caging a dog, because it takes longer to train them. They will just do what they have to in the cage, not learning to ask to go out.
With some treats you can get them to go to a safe spot, like a specific pillow or bed, then learn to stay there. Also keep a leash on their collar, to make escorting to the door easier. So you can let them out, or hook them to the door after a scolding for a mess. They will learn the scolding relationship to the mess and going to the door after a bit. Dogs are people pleaser's, they will learn because they want your approval. A treat after successfully going out for potty is a good reward. Also petting and positive comment for good behavior. "Good puppy, going to the door" Puppies lear your vocabulary fast, also tone. A scary voice could make them stop in thier tracks, but also make them pee from anxiety. So if you see them squatting say "wait, wait go to the door" and walk them there and out immediately. Petting them before thety come in with a job well done comment.
Some rub the nose, but a tap with rolled newspaper on the nose, works well too. It is not the force, but the sound that will convey displeasure with puppy actions. It really bugs them.
You probably know this, but just in case. I have trained a lot of dogs, I prefer a 6 week old, to an older puppy. Most six week's puppies get the idea in 2-3 days., the older, the longer needed, to break already learned bad habits.
I have a 15 month old and the gym is my temple, so I hear you. The LAST thing I'd want is a dog- it's like a toddler that NEVER grows up!
Any way to give it back? We're talking quality of life here, and it seems like the fluff ball is wrecking yours.
Yes, I'm a guy and I still like what Deli asked. Your fella brought the puppy to the house but you're the one cleaning up after it. Some might think that to be an less than fair division of labor.
I had a cat from 1989 to 2003. A stray kitten I brought into my apartment where I lived alone. As much as I've always been a dog person, it was my experience that cats were cleaner and easier to potty train.
I did it with a water pistol, poor guy. I hope it doesn't sound like abuse, but if my little buddy started to climb the curtains or tinkle on the carpet, a jet of water hit him from on high. The behavior modification gods had spoken.
He HATED getting wet, as many cats, do, so he'd stop what he was doing to go give himself a bath for an hour or so to get that icky water off of him.
After a few weeks, just pulling the water pistol out was enough, no need to pull the trigger. Then, no more water pistol needed at all. He turned into quite the little gentleman.
Have you had a calm discussion about this with your husband? Let him know that it is just too much more piled up for you. That you need your YOU time to stay sane. (And don't let him get by with the 'well, you can exercise while you walk the dog' deal.
As far as the 'at least you don't work' comments, just know that people making those comments have not experienced 24/7 childcare, housekeeping, and new puppy care all at once. Sure, it's an insensitive comment, from inexperienced individuals. Even those who work out of the home can go to the restroom in peace while they're at work... they're paying someone else for child care, most likely and just really have NO CLUE.
((( Annie))) take care of YOU...
2 days before my wife's knee replacement 7 puppies showed up in our barn. When the wife got home it was rough since she's very demanding when laid up (acts like a sick man)lol
Can he take puppy back if you're not already attached? Hope you get through this OK, Blaine
*hugs*
Have you tried crate training for the puppy? "Go to bed!" is the first command I teach any of my dogs, adult or puppy. Details available if you are interested.
More important is you not giving up on that self-care progress. It is downright discouraging how often life gets in the way of self-care, but it really is a critical piece of the puzzle. Hope ya can build on that progress.
The water pistol part had me laughing so hard I snorted... ;) I was having some great visuals...
It's still a work in progress...got a crate, working on not pottying in it. (The pup, I mean, lol.)
